Q: Curious - if there were some kind of nuclear event, would the unit be rendered useless from the EMP? Probably a dumb question.

In a nuclear event, you'd also have to worry about this . . . . The GMC 320 Plus's upper range limit is 32 millirem per hour. (A millirem is 1/1000th of a rem). According to the scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a Facility of the U.S. Department of Energy, in their 1987 "Nuclear War Survival Skills", small doses of around 6 rem per day should "produce no incapacitating symptoms. The human body usually can repair almost all radiation damage if the daily doses are not too large." They go on to say, "Instruments that measure only milliroentgen-range dose rates are sold for war use by some companies. Since most Americans have no idea what size of radiation doses would incapacitate or kill them, and do not even know that a milliroentgen is 1/1000 of a roentgen, some people buy instruments that are capable of measuring maximum dose rates of only one roentgen or less per hour." (One roentgen is equivalent to one rem.) The book further says that a meter that "can measure one roentgen (rem) per hour is far too low to be of much use in a nuclear war."

Q: How likely is Alpha radiation to be encountered after a nuclear accident such as Fukashima?

Alpha sensitivity is most useful for detecting particulate contamination on objects or the body. Uranium for example, is generally safe to handle, but as any alpha emitter, dangerous if ingested or inside the body. In this respect, alpha detection is good for "frisking". While having a counter that's sensitive to alpha is quite useful, you have to know the characteristics of such a sensor to understand what the readings mean.As for Fukashima, most fission products of concern to humans are detectable by an ordinary beta/gamma detector. Cesium 137, Strontium 90, Cobalt 60, Iodine 131. If you live in Japan, a detector such as this would be useful. If however you live in the United States and are concerned about Fukashima byproducts reaching our shores via weather or food supply, a Geiger counter will be absolutely useless. The levels are so unimaginably small that you need a proper gamma spectroscopy system to detect anything.

Sure does, but you can turn it off if you want to. It's not the loud knock you would see (hear) in the movies but more of a click.
