I love the smell
Brightens up warm red hair color. I love the smell. This has a fruity, sweet sent. It did not dye my scalp or dry my hair out. I did wear gloves when applying it. It lathers extremely well. I didn't need anywhere near as much of this shampoo as I need of regular shampoos. I like it enough to order more. I have fine, thick, dry hair and this shampoo left it smooth, soft, smelling nice, and redder than before. Other reviewers reported it being streaky and dying things pink. I haven't had that problem at all with the shampoo. The conditioner on the other hand does dye things pink and is a bit streaky. I highly recommend the shampoo, but not the conditioner.

A+ for Copper Reds
First of all, the scent! It is lovely. It lathers up quite a bit, but not as much as other shampoos I've used. I think this is a good thing, though, from what I've read. I have naturally dark blonde hair with red undertones and I've just started coloring my hair a copper red. This shampoo definitely helps keep the red vibrant between color applications.I also use the Madder Root Conditioner once a week and I think the conditioner definitely adds a bit of copper red tint to my hair whereas the shampoo just helps keep it vibrant. Overall, I'd recommend both to people who color their hair with copper red tones--I can't say how it works for the deeper, mahogany reds.

It is hard to imagine a coloring effect.
My review is limited by the way in which I have been using the shampoo, but it is hard for me to imagine this product actually working. The pigment in it does not seem to stick to any kind of material, really. It certainly does not stick to brown or white hair. The description suggests that it should work for people with red or auburn hair, and I want to be clear that I have not tried it on naturally red or auburn hair. Nevertheless, I have a suspicion that the people who see it "freshen up" their natural color may be perceiving an illusory correlation. After all, hair always looks refreshed, and the color looks more intense and interesting, after showering. As far as its cleaning function, the shampoo is fine. It has a slight cherry fragrance, produces a low-average amount of lather, rinses off easily, does not seem to be too drying, and does not seem to irritate too much.

An absolute must for fake red heads.
I love this shampoo. It has kept my last dye lasting twice as long as in the past. It is an absolute must. The only negative for me is the smell. It smells like the cheap soap you find in truck stop restrooms. However, the conditioner I use smells great, so I'm not left bothered by the smell of my hair all day. I would love it if they would freshen up the smell of the shampoo, but it won't stop me from using this product. Some people have said using it stains their towels. The only staining I saw was the first two days after dying my hair, and that was because of the residual hair dye in my hair. After that, there has been no marks on my white towels from this product.

Worse than it used to be
I used to use this shampoo years ago and the quality is so much worse. I am not sure why. It makes my hair extremely dry and lightens it to a dried out fried looking blonde color. Also it makes my scalp itch terribly.Overall, I think Aveda's products have declined in quality a lot since about 2000 and I don't plan on buying their hair care products anymore.

Adds a warm auburn glow to my brown hair.
I have been using this shampoo almost exclusively for the last 20 years (it may be longer, just can't remember that far back lol), even when I went blonde for a while. Then it made me a strawberry blonde. My hair is very fragile and this shampoo treats it gently. I'm entirely gray now, but will probably keep coloring my hair the rest of my life, so may have need of the Madder Root for another 20 years. Never surrender!

Great service. Product is good
Great service. Product is good. But it didn't work for my hair, it changed my burgundy color to red, especially with the color coordinating conditioner. And wasn't much hair improvement.

The Best Shampoo for Older Redheads
I'm a 53-year-old natural redhead with long hair. I've been using the Aveda Madder Root for 2 years and it has kept my fox-red hair vibrant and youthful looking. I don't have any grey hairs so I can't say what it might do to those but I do have natural blonde highlights and the shampoo doesn't turn these hairs red. However, I only use this as a second application shampoo. I wash with a neutral cleansing shampoo first, rinse and then use the Madder Root shampoo next. I do use a conditioner after I shampoo but I do not use the Aveda Madder Root conditioner.By shampooing like this, I can usually make a 33.8 oz bottle last for a year. The smell of the shampoo is terrific and I highly recommend it for older natural redheads who just need to add some vibrancy back to their natural color.
