can be very comfortable if you're able to change the insoles; padding around ankle wears out quickly
For the past several years, Nike Air Monarchs have been my favorite all-around shoes, mostly due to the comfort resulting from their soft foam rubber soles and 4E width (necessary for my duck feet). Unfortunately, in about half the pairs I've owned, the soles have eventually separated from the uppers at the sides, and typically in just under a year. Also, they begin squeaking loudly once broken in (although the squeaking can be mitigated somewhat with a little baby powder under the insole). Thus, I recently purchased a pair of the Reebok Royal Mt Cross-Trainers as a possible replacement for my Air Monarchs, mostly because they have a similar design to my Air Monarchs, and are also offered in 4E width. The Royal Mt Cross-Trainers seem fairly well constructed, so I'm hoping they'll last a while. Unfortunately, they have Memory Foam insoles. Memory Foam may be great as a mattress, but am I the only one who thinks using it as a shoe insole is the worst idea ever? It provides zero cushion and support. Your weight instantly compresses the foam and your feet sink straight to the bottom. I don't get how this idea made it past the testing phase. The good news is the memory foam insoles in the Royal Mt Cross-Trainers can be removed. But you must do so very slowly, because the glue holding them in is so sticky that pulling them out too quickly causes them to tear, leaving tiny pieces stuck inside the shoes, which are then very difficult to remove. Anyway, the insoles I replaced them with are the Spenco Total Support Original insoles, which run about $20, but are great. The Spencos have a comfortable arch support and nice cushion for the heel. For me, the Memory Foam insoles were the only glaring downside to the Reeboks, so replacing them with the aforementioned Spencos makes the Reebok/Spenco combo, at this early stage in the game, a promising heir apparent as my favorite all-around shoe.Edit (1/29/18): I've subtracted two stars from my original four star rating for a couple of reasons: Since I found this shoe to be exceedingly comfortable after swapping out the insidious memory foam insoles for higher end Spencos, I purchased a second pair of this shoe, worried availability might diminish. Upon receiving the second pair, I immediately proceeded to remove the insoles, but found them significantly more difficult to remove this time, as there was far more glue on this pair. After almost two hours spent picking out tiny pieces of the foam, I was finally able to get it to the point where I can feel no discernible lumps under the Spenco insoles I've replaced them with, but I'm now questioning the value in such effort. Also, I haven't even worn my first pair of these shoes regularly, and holes have already worn through the padding around the ankle area on both shoes. So resumes the search for my ideal shoe...

what's not to love after a full size up 9 to 10 in a 4e? oh, wait...
As someone suggested, I went a full size up from my usual NB 9 to a 10 4e - then, what's not to love? VERY comfortable - the cushion is great and for me the toe box is fine, the arch support is perfect - and very stable laterally, which is what I look for. It's hard to find wide shoes where the sole is wider than the upper, to keep me from rollovers from the occasional deep grass rock or sidewalk irregularities or just general supination. These are them! Other Pros and Cons:Pros- For me the $40 price is good gravy- Built like a tank, VERY high quality, they must have found a new level of China factory- Excellent for walking from the training room to the locker room, etc.- They're not pointy and garish, phew.- The heel pull is not only handy but at my age almost necessaryCons- They do have quite a bit of herringbone on the soles for picking up floor-scarring grit- Uppers are designed for much lower insteps than mine, the laces hardly close over the shiny tongues- I've had to go with a lacing trick, see my photo, until I can measure and buy longer laces- They don't keep out snow and water up to my knees, or drain like water sneaks ;)- Not the best for tree or pole climbing ;)- As with tanks, heavy, and I doubt anyone will run very far with them

Reebok Royal Trainer fit and feel
All of this style of shoes appear to be made by one or two companies in a China (same blinding white soles). I wear 9M in almost all shoes, but have a very high instep that causes me sometimes to go 1/2 size larger. Ordered these Reebok Royal trainers originally in 9M and had to return...too small, too tight. In the meantime, picked up a pair of Nike Monarch IV in 9.5M. Way too small and tight even after I loosened the laces. Tried a 10M and too big! Also, a lot of these shoe companies are brain damaged. Used to be sizes ran M, then E, EE, EEE, etc. Now they only offer this style in M & EEEE! Give me a break! Finally ordered the Reebok Royal Trainer in 9.5M. Yes they were a bit narrow and tight. Loosened up the laces and that fixed most of the tightness. Wore them every day this week and the gel insole is finally takinga set which is causing the shoe to fit much better. The fit is not perfect, but is definitely tolerable. No aches, no pain, no pinching.Reebok is still the best shoe of this style one can find!

They saved my feet..as well as my knees
Since around the spring of 2010 I've had serious issues with my feet. One foot seems like a neurological issue and the other seems like arch issues or something to do with the bones. Needless to say, they hurt like hell for about 4 1/2 years. I tried many shoes over time including skechers and new balance with the same painful results. In the fall of 2014 I was at a local store having a sale on these Reebok Royals for about 30 bucks. I tried them and thought, "Well...for $30 my feet will hurt but it'll be cheaper". Well, within a day and a half of wearing these, the pain in both feet went from a 10 down to a 1 or a 2. So since that time, I've bought loads of these shoes to store away like a squirrel hoarding nuts for winter. Knowing my luck, Reebok will quit making these. That's why i buy so many.I can't say these shoes will fit everyone's needs, but they work for me like gangbusters. My feet aren't perfect by any means but all I know is if I try other shoes instead of these, my knees and feet let me know pretty quick..."take em off!!!'.*note to Reebok...Please never stop making these:D
