When my daughter expressed interest in learning Chess after purchasing a Checker/Chess set, I began watching a few tutorials and looking at different books to help us learn the game. I found that most tutorials assume that you know basic Chess language and vocabulary and the instruction left me confused quickly. I read a review of this book written by a grandmother who had purchased it for her grandson and I thought I would give it a try. My daughter and I LOVE this book! The conversational style that it is written in has helped us pick up the language of Chess and the little hints that the characters give to help you remember details about the board, the way the pieces move, and how to win are extremely helpful. We are especially enjoying the mini games that are designed to teach you how to master the way each piece moves around the board before moving on to a new piece. The difficulty level increases and it "eases you into" learning a full blown game of Chess. My daughter is a teenager but, we are hoping to use this book to help my 6 year old learn as well. The book is well written, engaging, and illustrated in a fun, playful style. I highly recommend it for all ages who are looking to learn Chess. Review: Great Chess Book for All Ages - Check out and read through 10 books on chess at the library so I could learn chess to keep up with my grandson. I picked The Batsford Book of Chess for Children to purchase because it clearly explains, through character conversations and very clear illustrations and examples, each chess piece and the moves each makes. There are "mini games" you can play with one or two pieces each time a piece is introduced. This logical progression makes it much easier to recall and practice the moves of each piece. Clear, easy, concise so players of all ages become competent with the pieces and moves.

Great book!!!
Great book!! The nine year old really enjoyes us role playing as we go through it. So far she has learned every thing it has to offer. It's just a matter of practice, practice, practice just like any thing else we excel in. I wish I could find books by the same auther on opening, middle, and end games. Thank you Ms. Chevannes for a great book!

Fantastic book for kids!
I am very impressed that a game as complicated as chess can be presented in a simple fun way for children to learn the whole game very well on their own. My 7 year old grandson has read the whole book and knows how to play the game! As the reader learns about each piece the book features a simple game using that learned piece. Brilliant!

Great for kids and adult never-ever
Just got this for my daughter for Xmas. She loves it, it takes a never-ever chess player gradually through the pieces so that you're playing shorter, faster games right away and in the process building your knowledge. It's particularly fun for a parent and child because the book is written as a dialogue between two people (so my daughter and I trade off reading it).

Fantastic book to teach the game of chess to children. In fact the best I've found. The art is very nice (much better than later versions) and the concepts are sound and useful. You can take turns to read the characters dialogue to make it more involving while they read.
