Douay-Rheims and Clementina Vulgata: English-Latin Bible

Practically a necessity to any academic looking into Christianity, or religion in general, in any detail. With the Latin Vulgate, and the English translation side by side this book is a perfect text for anyone looking into Christian history, from Jerome's translation onward, and for those looking at post reformation Catholicism. Importantly, this is the cheapest version of the bible I could find which contained both Latin, and English, and it does the job nicely. Also, on a more shallow level, it is a very nice looking book, with lovely gold-leaf, and a leather binding. Although, it is very big, and a bit unwieldy, definitely something to keep in the office, so it's close at hand when you need it.

Arrived ahead of time , a very beautiful bible . Having the Latin vulgate and Douary-Rheims English translation side by side is really helpful, I have limited Latin skills but even I can follow along. I will treasure this for ever

This took me by surprise, what size what a weight, got it for my wife's 60th Birthday, and is she happy. This is a beautiful Bible and honestly, you would do well to find one made better and looks better. If you love someone and you got them this, then they would know just how much you love them.

This Bible is truly beautiful Family Bible. it is large with English and Latin side by side the Latin is the Vulgata Latina; the Bible is the Council of Trent and the Douay Rheims updated for todays Catholic Student

This beautifully ornamented Bible is fantastic. Not only is it pretty on the outside, but it is beautiful on the inside, too! Latin and English are side-by-side; a nice touch for anyone looking for learning material. Easily an heirloom piece.

The Douay Rheims Clementina Vulgata by Baronius Press was out of print but is back and this impression has good size text and perfectly parallel English - Latin side by side, not overlapping,for comparison. It's not pocket size, but holds nicely in any suitably sized bag for reading or carrying. A bag doesn't come with it. The prices for this were silly when out of print but the current prices as it is back in print are reasonable and may fall further. It's great to have this back on Amazon.

Excellent Bible, was just what I wanted, it contained the original Latin of the Vulgate as well as it's Douay-Rheims translation, great for learning Ecclesial Latin. My only concern is that the book itself is quite big, not exactly something you can carry around with you, but other than that it's an excellent Bible, the book itself is quite beautiful.

I wanted a Holy Bible which not only was excellent textually but also visually, most Bibles do not look like Holy Books any more but rather regular books. This one is an exception! I can Hold this Bible and say... this is a Holy Bible! You can't judge a book by it's cover however which is where I must get into the content the english translation is the best I would say in existance, I read the King James Version but every time I check the Douay Rheims version I always find it to be superior to the King James Version, a perfect example would be 1 Corinthians 7:9 it truly leaves no room for interpretation! The latin is beautiful and the font is normal sized, to be honest I thought it would be much smaller, what makes it great is this Holy Book is Larger than it looks! It is huge so even though the font may not be considered large the words are very well spaced which makes it extremely easy to read. Anyone interested in this product should know a few points however. 1)This Holy Bible is HUGE, it contains all of the Books that Belong in the Bible including everything which was in the King James Version Apocrypha and was removed by unfaithful protestant publishers. 2)It is not a Bible you will be carrying around, this is one of those Bibles that you place in your work room or study room or put on a pedestal. It's not really a bad thing, it's a good thing, because that is exactly what this Bible was designed for. It's more of a house Bible. The reason this Bible gets 5 stars is because there is no other Bible like it, you will not find a better Latin and English Interlinear with such nice spacing and a normal sized text. Also the cover is beautiful, other reviewers gave the Bible 4 stars because they complained about the fusing of the pages and the binding, this Bible is certainly not a Bible to carry around I can see the binding getting damages really easily but if it is handled as intended...(in a house or church sitting on a desk) it should be fine. As for the pages a few of them were fused together and I had to peel a few pages apart on the tips, it was not a big deal. Just expect a little tiny scratch on the edge of a page or two. It bothered me at first but then I remembered your not going to get anything better so I have to give it 5 stars because there is no point looking anywhere else. If you want a Holy Bible that is JUST a Holy Bible(with excellent and honest commentary) in English and Latin with all the books(Wisdom of Solomon, 2 Esdras(4 Esdras in Latin) etc) this is the Bible you are looking for! Anyone thinking of getting this Bible should also remember Latin was the language of the faithful not Greek or Hebrew. The Hebrews denied Christ and wanted to destroy his Miracles and the Greeks while some were faithful many were also doubtful to the new faith as they already had many pagan false religions. The Latin on the other hand was the language of the faithful which they used to pass down the truth of what the Apostles and Prophets taught.

Though I have only had this magnificent Book in my keeping for several weeks; I now consider to it to be one of my most valued and important possessions. It's the most exquisitely constructed and compiled Bible I have ever witnessed and I would recommend it to anyone, both Catholic and Protestant who desire to come to a greater understanding of the Word of God. Between its meticulously crafted covers is contained manifold delights, revelations, truths and is the doorway into the Kingdom of Heaven and the Mind of God. The aureate pages gently guide the reader's hand over the greatest book ever written, and the finest story ever told. People from different walks of life, religions, creeds and beliefs and even those with historical interests can glean joy from the inherent beauty of its pages - there is something for all: the lives and persecutions of the prophets and the saints, the laborious struggles of the Israelites, the sorrowful ecstasy of the Psalms of David, the golden truths of the Proverbs seep from the gilded pages into the eyes of the reader, the exhortation and absolute reign of Charity in the inspired words of St. Paul, and of course the Way, the Truth and the Life itself - the Word Incarnate Jesus Christ. This Book is a study par excellence of the actual translation of Biblical Scripture from the Clementina Vulgata, written by St. Jerome and completed in 405 AD. I've only recently in life had a calling to the faith, and am still in the process of discovering what that means. In short I'm still a catechumen and so I unfortunately cannot offer as in depth of a review as some others here can and have done. What I can say though, is that my process of discovery is so greatly and beautifully informed by this Douay-Rheims version of the Holy Bible. I am so glad I've decided to make it my first Bible. I've studied Latin years ago and I can't stress enough how striking it is to me to be able to have the Clementina Vulgata right next to the English translation - the formatting is absolutely perfect in aligning the texts. There have been times where I was reading a passage in English and noticed a curious phrasing, prompting me to want to know if this was Bishop Challoner's prose or not. I could quickly scan to the right and find that indeed the Latin verbiage was just as poetic. There have also been times where context simply could not be translated to English, and I found myself smiling in joy after reading a section of Latin that otherwise would have been completely missing or left flat. Even if you have no interest in reading the Bible in Latin, having the text that so many millions of Christians were taught by from the 300s to 1500s adds such an enormous weight to what you hold in your hands that even if you are still skeptical about God, you can't help but feel His impact. As others have posted here, the Bible itself is stunning in it's beauty. I was so taken aback by it's richly detailed binding and golden, tea-soaked pages that I felt compelled to build a bookstand for it, which is where it now sits today. As great a setpiece as the Bible itself makes however, I frequently find myself taking it off it's stand to bring outdoors to a lake, or a park, to read and contemplate. It is certainly not very portable however and I suggest either finding a folder for it, or do as I did and retain the cardboard box it is shipped in to protect it while in the car, or in your purse/backpack. This Bible will be in my family for generations, God willing. It's been changing my life for the better, and while I know not many would look to this largely out of use, slightly obscure, Latin-laden version of the Bible as their first choice for their first Bible, to anyone out there who finds themselves in that boat I highly suggest you pick this up. It may not fit in your pocket, it may make you re-read and really think about what it is you just read, it may be an investment that is hard to justify monetarily. But the Word of God is not meant to be easy. The hard path brings us into His light always, and I hope you find this path for yourself. This version will certainly point you in the right direction, as it has me.
