Schulz, Gary Groth, Walter Cronkite, Seth: Books Review: Charlie Brown in 1953 and 1954 - Everything you would ever wish to know about the "early days" of Peanuts is in these complete editions. I purchase the 1950-1952, so perhaps after this volume, I will proceed to 1954 on. The paper quality, organization of material, the binding; everthing works on this purchase. Review: Beginning to End - As I was born in the early 50's, Charles Schulz was just shaping his career in illustrating the Charlie Brown - Peanuts comics. Back then, TV was limited, expensive to own and newspapers were considered a non-essential. My exposure to Charlie Brown came mostly after I had children of my own. By then most everyone had at least one TV and shows were broadcast over the air. The Charlie Brown cartoons and specials at Holiday time were always a treat. This collection of books from the beginning to end of Charles M. Schulz life's work is something I will treasure. Although there is now the ability to download all the books to read on a computer, laptop, phone or pad; for me there is nothing more relaxing than holding a book and reading, while enjoying a hot cup of tea. I've decided to fill in the books using colored pencils. After reading about Charles M. Schultz death and his final words, I knew I had to order all the books beginning to end in Hardcover format. I have alot of catching up to do.

Get each addition of this series! do not buy the compilation books
I would highly recommend that if you love Charles Schulz and the Peanuts cartoon series you should collect the series that includes this book, the series has absolutely every cartoon Charles Schultz published in newspapers from the very first cartoon in 1950 and each and every cartoon every day that he put into publication is shown in sequence from the very beginning and each one is always the next day you can even see the date written next to his signature to know what day of the year it was. It's absolutely fascinating to see how Schultz began peanuts and then slowly evolved over time and to have an absolute concise collection of every single cartoon is something that you cannot get from the much lower quality "compilations". Rest in peace Charles Schultz your legacy continues in this series for generations to enjoy forever!

The strips inside were wonderful and also funny, but the book jacket was ripped. I am disappointed about how it was delivered

A Masterwork Continues
In this second volume of the Peanuts collection, we continue to see Schulz's world as it evolved towards what became its glory years (late 1950s to late 1960s). Charlie Brown is still a smart aleck, but gradually his professional victimhood is taking form. Lucy is still sweet and babyish at the beginning of this volume, but by the end she is definitely moving towards her loud mouth, abrasive, loveable self. Snoopy is becoming less doggy and more human (we get to imagine the inside of his doghouse for the first time), and Linus is showing signs of genius even though he can't speak yet. We also see some favorite characters for the first time, noteably Pig Pen, and get to see some failed experiments, such as Charlotte Braun, a loud mouth who moved into the neighborhood for awhile but obviously didn't work out. I was also interested to see some indirect allusions to the real world of the mid 1950s in these early strips, such as one character's refusing to incriminate himself (he must have been watching the McCarthy hearings on those old TV sets!). This is a fun volume which presages some of the finest Peanut moments, which we'll be able to see again in coming years, thanks to this series' creators.

These books awe wonderful!
These books are so awesome! Generally we have bought the two-packs of paperbacks, but this hardcover is so nice I almost wish we had started collecting these. Our son loves Peanuts. He is 11. He especially loves the early years of Peanuts and this is one of his favorites! These have all the peanuts strips for the years listed. We have a pretty large collection and they allow for hours of enjoyment! My husband and son have their own little inside jokes about these because I have not read them as much and there are many strips I don’t know that they do.

It was fascinating to be able to read some of the episodes that were not included in the Fawcett-Crest paperbacks that I collected as a kid and young adult. Of course the paperback books are no longer in print, and I very stupidly sold my collection to my brother in law for his grandson in 1985.Even if it was family, i have never ceased to regret doing it, and have been looking to recoup the old books without success. Now, with the beginning of the Fantagraphics releases of The Complete Peanuts begun in 2004, and with releases of one new volume twice yearly until the final script by Charles M. Schulz which was written in 2000, just days before his death will be released sometime in 2016, thus leaving every peanuts script readily available for purchase and perhaps help ease the heartaches of those people like me who now regret having given up their Fawcett-Crest or Holt Reinhart Winston versions of Peanuts and are grateful for a second chance at Peanutdom. This second volume features the years from 1953-54. this volume introduces us to a new character near the end of 1954, a girl named Charlotte Braun, who's normal voice is very loud, and she comes across as rather obnoxious, but she is not around for long. In early 1955, she is dropped from the script. But this was the first time I'd ever seen her in any of the Peanuts comics. but for these and other reasons, I strongly recommend buying volume 2 of The Complete Peanuts 1953-54. A chance to see the script in the early years of Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Patty, Shermy, Violet, Schroeder, and of course snoopy. I also enjoyed Volume 3-1955-56, Volume6-61-62, and Volume 7-63-64, and am looking forward to Volume 5-59-60 which I haven't received yet. Enjoy!

This item came in like 2 weeks before its approximate time. Well packaged to preserve its new condition. Great addition to my 1950 to 1952 book and Peanut collection.
