Is there any way to know when you need to replace the filters? Or do you just have to keep up with how much you use it?

There is no exact way to know when to replace the carbon capsules. We estimate that if you use your Lifestraw every day, it would be around 3 months. However, if you don't use it everyday, taste might be an indicator -- if you notice chlorine taste in your water, it may be time to replace the capsules.

Can you just clean these filters or do they really need to be replaced? Price seems steep for only being able to filter around 26 gallons per filter.

they should be replaced because they may accumulate bacteria. I don't think that is a bad price for 2 of them, they usually cost 12.95-14.95 The filters last 2-3 times longer but cost more.
