Works great on marijuana smoke! (plus lots of other stuff)
I'll get to why I knocked a star off my review in a minute (check out my update at the bottom, back to 5 stars). Just know, this thing is amazing! I wouldn't call it a great value, but it's worth every single penny. We have 4 dogs in a single story open design of about 1250 square feet. I instantly noticed a huge improvement in air quality within a short time after turning it on! The auto function works amazingly well. It will be sitting there on it's lowest fan speed, having successfully cleaned the air all day/night. The little blue circle indicator light tells you your air is currently at it's cleanest. I'll light up a joint about 20' from the purifier and within a minute or so I'll notice the fan speed crank up to its fullest! (It's still super quiet though, even on its highest you can't hear it with a TV on) Red indicator light! Then purple! It tells me right away that my air has been polluted and it's working to fix it. Within 20 or 30 minutes, the whole house is completely smoke and scent free! It's perfect for all you well-to-do stoners such as myself. You make good money, you have nice things, you're a grown up now! You don't want other adults coming over to your marijuana smoke filled house. Especially all your friends with kids. Or maybe you have kids? What kind of an example are you setting!? Opening the windows on a nice day only does so much. And if you have cold winters and can't open the windows, what then? You buy this thing ya dummy. All those problems will be solved. I knocked off a star because my wife is making me return it. She doesn't like how it looks. I don't think it's terrible. It's the great air purifier paradox: In order for it to work well it's needs to be out in the open, but to be out in the open it needs to not look stupid. There's a lot of air purifiers that I passed over based on looks alone. This one I was on the fence about, the color choice of the panel helped push me over. I'm going to add a picture to this review. If you agree with me and think it's looks not that terrible, leave me a comment! Or if you're wrong and agree with my wife's decision to return it, please don't let me know. Anyway, you can turn off the panel lights by pressing the big colorful button in the middle while it's running. That's obviously nice if you're gonna use this in a bedroom. It'd be nice if you could turn the panel lights on and off without having to turn the entire unit off. Seems like an unnecessary power cycle just to adjust the lights. But hey, it's got a lifetime warranty so who cares if it breaks from excessive power cycles! Long story longer - I'm going to have a hard time replacing this with something else, especially with how well it works. The bar is set REALLY high for cleaning the air in my house now after owning this thing for only a few days. I'm addicted to the fresh air. I work from home and spend a lot of time here. It feels really nice. I will caveat this entire review and say this is the first air purifier I've ever owned. Maybe they all do pretty well? Most of the major players have good reviews. I think it comes down to aesthetics when you spend this much. We don't have a ton of space in our house, so this thing has to sit right out in the open for everyone to wonder and ask what it is. It has to look good. I'll admit that it's not the sexiest. Unfortunately, function over form is losing this battle to form over function this time. P.S. - what maniac thought purple was the right color to indicate your air quality is at its worse!? Why would red indicate the second worst air quality?? Is there some standardized air pollution color rating system that I'm just not aware of? ****Update 2 weeks in, back to a 5 star review**** OK, we tried to replace this unit with a different, more aesthetically pleasing purifier. We tried the Coway AirMega 400. It looks great, covers a similar square footage, and has even better features than this Alen 75i unit....but it flat out just didn't work as well. It was also MUCH louder. With this Alen 75i unit in the same exact position as the Coway AirMega, the air was noticeably cleaner and smell free. Also, on it's loudest setting the 75i is hardly noticeable with a TV on. The Coway AirMega was at least 4 or 5x louder on it's loudest setting...to the point where you didn't want to run it on it's highest setting unless you weren't home. We tried this unit in a few different positions around the house, some out of the way where it didn't work as well, and now in it's new spot (different from the pictures I posted) and it's seriously great! My wife isn't thrilled with the spot we landed on, but it works really well and isn't as bad as she once thought. Seems that function over form has come through to win in the end!

A very good solution for serious air cleaning
I've had this a month, and I bought another as well...and a 45i. I looked at the ratings in Consumer Reports: the 75i had the highest rating of all they tested, so I got it. It is large, and the incoming air vents are large: which means that there is not much noise made by incoming air...and you do not have to run it on the highest levels. I have found the noise to be quite reasonable, and not an annoying sound. One has been in my den which has a lot of books: the dust accumulation has been greatly reduced. The filters have helped with our allergies. I like its simplicity. Fortunately there is no remote control: they just get lost and save no effort in any event. Wifi? Why? There is a light for ordering the filter and then replacing it. You can turn the lights completely off on the panel if you want (e.g., at night). The warranty is apparently indefinite, but it does require a subscription for filters. However, you only need one subscription--no matter how many units you have--and you can choose how often they arrive (from every 6 months on up). The 45i is smaller, and so better for small rooms. About price: I bought all 3 from Amazon (rather than from the Alen website) because the prices were significantly lower. However, SOME Amazon prices were higher (for different covers): you just have to be careful. Also, there are variations on filters: once you get to charcoal filters, the replacements are more expensive (and according to Consumer Reports, the charcoal does not last as long as the HEPA filter). This is the 3rd brand I've had over the years: and I like it the best. The only downside is that it's made in China (although it is an American company).

An Excellent Product
An excellent product! This is my second Alen BreathSmart Air Purifier. Because the first—used for an upstairs master bedroom—work sufficiently, I decided to get a larger one for the entire downstairs area. The larger one has been working extraordinarily well. I have glass coffee tables, end tables, and tv stand that would be covered in dust two-to-three days after thorough dusting. Since I have been using the purifier, dusting has only been necessary every couple of weeks, and even then it's primarily to remove smudge marks, not dust. Even the wooden floors stay, essentially dust-free, for weeks at a time. The motor is inaudible when the air is clean, which is now, most of the time. The BreathSmart Purifier was quite active during the unrelenting smoke from the series of massive, historic, fires here in northern California. The sound of the motor was certainly noticeable, then, but not at all intrusive to typical household activities (e.g., talking on phone, watching tv, reading, sleeping, etc.). The automatic settings have been working perfectly well. It activates its higher settings in response to food smells from cooking, but returns quickly to its inaudible mode in fewer than 20 minutes, or so, after cooking has ceased. The next stage of product development should be the creation of a much smaller version of the product while maintaining the same quality and performance. Still, the appearance of the purifier is as aesthetic as it is effective. The blue light, indicating the air is clean, is both reassuring and comforting. An excellent product, to be sure!

Not sure how well it really works, but I like to think it works well
I went through a few air purifier options before I ended up buying an Alen purifier. The cost was very off-putting, but I was able to cover half of it with a gift card making it much easier to swallow the cost. I also purchased during a pretty large sale discount. Keep an eye out and you can sometimes find it for $100+ off of the retail price. I am going to list out my Pro and Con list below, and detail my experience with the Alen customer support/service team. Pros: - Very Quiet compared to others I have used - Particle Air Quality Sensor is awesome to have - Covers 1300 Square Feet (according to marketing) - H13 True HEPA Filter - Sound tuned to be more pleasing for sleep - Lifetime Warranty through Forever Guarantee (requires active filter subscription through Alen) - Outstanding Customer Service - WiFi connectivity (see Cons) - Can disable the ionizer - Low Power Draw/Energy Efficient Cons: - Removable Power Cord Socket on the unit is loose/wiggles inside the unit (seems to be a widespread issue with this model. They should really re-design the power cord solution.) - Lower CADR rating than many other options - Very high retail price - WiFi connectivity exists but NO usability (no app exists to take advantage of this, Alen says it is coming but they have been saying that for years) - Filter Life? (may be a fluke experience, but my filter included with the unit went bad in 1 month) - Potential EMF Radiation (I have not tested this, but most if not all purifiers emit some level of radiation) Customer Service Experience: After 1 month of continuous 24/7 use, my unit began to give off a burnt smell. It smelled like something was burning or old cigarettes (keep in mind no one in my household smokes). I purchased my unit with the Fresh (Allergy, Odor, Smoke) filter because I wanted it to filter out VOC from furnitures, etc. I registered my unit with Alen directly and subscribed to the yearly filter replacement program to enable my Forever Guarantee. I was planning to enroll in this direct with Alen from day 1 anyways. I contacted Alen by email and then by phone to speed along the process. I got through to a real person very quickly and everyone I talked with was very nice and helpful. The rep contacted Amazon to verify my purchase to ensure my unit was valid. After that, we performed some troubleshooting to figure out if it was the unit or the filter. The result was the unit running with no filter gave off no smell. As soon as the filter was installed again, the smell immediately returned. The rep resolved the issue by sending a replacement filter at no cost. Unfortunately I received the wrong filter option, but because we have a newborn and the new filter is designed to also filter out diaper odors I decided to keep it and use this one. After roughly 24 hours of vinegar odor from the new filter, it has been operating wonderfully ever since. At the end of the day, I do recommend this product under the assumption that it makes a difference in the air quality we breathe indoors. I do notice that the room it is used in primarily smells much more fresh than the other rooms in our home. I have been on the fence about purchasing a second unit for the living room, but the cost is just so high. I can get a 45i instead, but I like the extra cleaning capabilities and more sensitive air quality sensor the 75i has.

Actually Does What It Was Designed to Do
We live in an older home and dust and other flying debris is rampant. I am allergic to dust and almost constantly having to wipe my nose. I've been wanting one of these things that would actually clean the air I breath in my home. I read on Consumer Reports that this one did what I needed done, cleaned the air of the particles I could see floating in the sunlight coming in the windows. It is a bit expensive but what is the price on one's health. I rolled the dice, it came, way to simple to set up, just very nice. The proof was in the air quality. I set it on automatic and it started running on high with the circle of light showing dark red. After a few hours the circle air quality indicator gradually turned green. I noticed the difference soon and am breathing much better now. I love this thing. Worth the cost if you want to breathe clean air in your home. When I cook anything in the kitchen(one room away from the machine) it kicks into high gear, the light turns toward the red and it goes louder until the air is clean again. I only hear it running when the air quality deteriorates from some known source. It cleans the air of dust, smoke and other stuff I'm sure I don't want to breath. Like I said, I love it. I recommend this product.

Really works; very quiet; features and performance are hard to beat
Even if you can't tell by the disappearance of odors and the improved breathability of your indoor air, you can tell this thing is really doing something by watching the lights and fan on automatic, as they work to clean the air. We initially got this when some major concrete work was being done nearby that would've sent cancer-causing dust into our house. We sealed up the doors and windows and even so, this machine knew the air needed to be cleaned and did its job. Since then, we leave it on all the time unless we want to keep windows open for "fresh air", at which time it ramps up, detecting that our outdoor air quality isn't as good as what we have indoors! Ratings in other sources mention that other units are quieter. I have to say that if you're bothered by whatever noise this unit is making on its lowest fan speed, you're ultra sensitive. I have a sound meter and it never shows anything above background noise on the lowest setting, and while you can hear it when you're close to the machine and the room is dead quiet, it's as quiet as anything you're ever going to need. I can hear our refrigerator on the other side of the house when it's on over this machine. Noise absolutely is not a problem!

Non-existent Customer Support
Product arrived defective, with a loose / worn bearing in the motor making a racket, which was especially noticeable at low speeds. No problem, I'll just exchange it. Can't exchange it. Amazon only lets it be returned, then you gotta buy another one. Ok, I'll contact support. Amazon support on something like this is meaningless (e.g. "Did you plug it in?") Reached out to Alen on their web site. 30 minutes on the chat, nobody picks up. Tried entering a service ticket using the online form. Can't do that without a genuine Alen order number (Amazon order number will not work.) Is there an "email us" button? Nope. Can't even email them. Just a service ticket system that only works if you bought it from them. Finally tried the phone number in the manual. BTW, it is NOT a dedicated support number, it's their only number ("Press 1 if you are a vendor, press 2 if you want to market our products, etc..." Waited for the option for "get help." Pressed it. Another 30 minutes of jazzy background music. Nobody picked up. Unbelievable. So back to Amazon it went. Might be a good product (if you get one that's not defective) but their poor customer support sealed the deal on this one. I'm out.

Disappointed
I recently purchased this especially for the VOC and the other good stuff it stated for my lower level condo. Yes, I need clean air in my condo so I went all out. It's big and beautiful and so far it is telling me the air is clean. I will update accordingly. you can turn the purifier light off at nights while it's working if you like that option and also increase the speed of the fan. It does not have wheels, which would have been a bonus.
