Version: Blu-Ray 3D I love the Jurassic Park series of movies, and particularly the way they're based on legitimate science. Until now, Jurassic Park III was the biggest disappointment, as it's sole purpose seemed to be to show bigger, badder dinosaurs without any real plot. Jurassic World redeemed the series, although I'm still not clear on how we got from twice deciding not to build a theme park, to having a fully operational, state-of-the-art theme park with dinosaur rides and dinosaur shows with trained dinosaurs. You would think the investors would have learned their lesson. It's hard to reconcile even hundreds of millions of dollars in profits with the fallout from even one person being eaten by a dinosaur. Even under the best of circumstances, something is bound to go wrong. As we all know, in Jurassic World, something major went wrong and a lot of people died. So once again, we have a movie based on a ruined theme park. Been there, done that. I trust this is not really a spoiler, but Fallen Kingdom opens with a previously thought extinct volcano roaring back to life, threatening the only island where the dinosaurs still exist. So instead of the volcano being extinct, the dinosaurs are about to become extinct again. Pardon me, but didn't we learn in the second Jurassic Park movie, Lost World, that there were actually two islands - A and B? Jurassic World was clearly set on the original island, A, so what ever happened to B? It was supposedly completely separate and shouldn't have been affected by the volcano. Don't you hate plot inconsistencies? So the underlying premise of Fallen Kingdom is that the dinosaurs are about to become extinct again, unless something can be done to save them. Perhaps they should be allowed to die - after all, they weren't meant to be a part of this world in the first place. But powerful monied interests see a huge potential for profit and although some are altruistic, there are those who's only interest is in selling to the highest bidder. Does this plot sound familiar? Sadly, that's the only part of the movie that's actually logical. Fallen Kingdom is the middle movie in a second Jurassic Park trilogy. It is the bridge between first Jurassic World movie and a third one in which the dinosaurs have been released into the world. The problem is that rescuing eleven species of dinosaurs using only one small ship would mean a very limited number of dinos rescued at all. The numbers that could be rescued hardly would constitute a viable breeding colony for even one species, let alone eleven. Even if they were released into the world, they would become extinct within a generation. But wait! Some of the dinos can fly, and some can swim, so what makes us think they're still restricted to that one tiny island? The reality is that there should already be dinosaurs roaming the world, upsetting the world order. And why is it that dinosaurs that couldn't be contained on an island, can suddenly be kept safely in cages in Northern California? I'm not going to give away anything more of the plot, but suffice it to say that much of it - actually most of it - defies logic. It's hard to be entertained by a movie when it asks you to disband so much belief and simply ignore science and logic. And now we're supposed to believe that a handful of escaped dinosaurs are going to take over the world. Frankly, the tiny zebra mollusk is far more dangerous, being a highly invasive species that is responsible for the displacement of dozens of others. The extras on the Blu-ray Disc are pathetic and hardly worth the time to watch. They're a joke, quite literally - each one a sort of 'Hi all, we're having fun filming this, or we're having fun filming that'. There are no insights into the making of the movie at all. Pathetic. There isn't even a director's commentary track for the movie. Don't bother buying the disc - it's not something you'll ever want to watch again and the extras aren't even worth watching once. There is one bright spot, however. Next to Avitar, the 3D version of Fallen Kingdom makes the best use of 3D of any movie I've watched. Let's face it, 3D didn't catch on for home theater, not so much because of the need for expensive glasses, but because it didn't add anything to the overall experience of watching a movie. Once one becomes engrossed in the plot of a movie, the use of 3D becomes secondary. In fact, there's good evidence that the brain is so conditioned to the watching of 2D content that it automatically recreates the perception of a 3D reality in the mind. However, the vast majority of 3D movies made have over-utilized 3D effects and exaggerated the perspective to the point that 3D actually becomes a distraction rather than an enhancement. Other movies, the first Jurassic World, for example, use such repetitive backgrounds that the appearance of depth is lost. Fallen Kingdom's 3D effects are perfect, helping to make up for what is otherwise a forgettable plot.

The movie is pretty good especially the first half! 3D effects are natural no gimmick shots. I have watched many "blockbuster" movies in the past decade and I can only remember 2-3 movies there I felt the same level of excitement during the "action" scene, you will know which sequence when you see it! (many big robots and super here movie sequences are not very exciting these days due to poor CG and sound effect mixing) The second half is dark (in brightness and plot-wise!). As you know 3D glasses already makes a darker viewing and is harder to see dark scenes, and overall, less action that could not possibly top the first half of the movie. so it was kind of anti-climatic after the first half. Same apply for sound as well, super loud on the first half due to what is on the screen. This sound mix is full on. These days with some home BD/4K release from disney / marvel coming with crippled sound mixes this kind of sound, is very welcome.
