Chickens digest whole peas very well so long as they have grit available, and it is good exercise for their gizzards, although some small breeds of birds may prefer smaller bits. Whole peas are high quality in terms of nutrition. That’s how they would find them if they were out foraging naturally in the late summer and fall. Grinding peas makes them dusty and the birds tend to not like that because it gums up the corners of their beaks, but cracking them into several pieces would solve both problems. It also exposes their bright colors. We want you and your birds to love every bit of the feed, so we may consider cracking them.

What is the suggested amount to feed per adult chicken per day?

Should just let your chickens eat as much as they want to eat, I have a 35 gal garbage can converted into a feeder I keep full of food plus another great feeder for outside use that holds another 50 lbs of chicken feed. Mine also free range on my 5 acres as well. I have 40 chickens that basically eat pretty much non stop one way or another with grains, layer feed, bugs, worms, kitchen scrapes, berries, and the list goes on! Oh and they also like a can of dog food from time to time too! Chickens seem pretty smart, they just don’t eat things not good for them as far as food goes. Just keep them away from styrofoam cause they go crazy pecking it to pieces! No joke! LOL
