If Not For This

This is no fairytale romance, this is what it's like to build a life between two people. This is passion. This is regret and negotiation and bargaining and despair and carrying on because it matters to love people. It all matters. This is a novel that pays due respect to men and women both, to their willingness to hold on, to recognize what they have and the truth of it. It is reflective of my own experience. It is the sort of novel to show something worth striving for, striving to be. It's luck when I get to read two books in a row that I love this much.

I really enjoyed this book. The story is powerful, but told in a a manner that evokes strength rather than seeking an emotional response. The reader follows the development of a serious disease over most of the narrator's life. I came away strengthened by the story. Pete Fromm has developed into a very talented writer. I highly recommend this book.

This book tells the story, in a beautifully honest way, of changes in life plans with the thread of true love woven throughout. I was engaged early on with the writing technique and loved the progression of love as it matured. Love deepened as life changes progressed all in a believable and relatable way. Will read this book again and again knowing I will find truths and a deeper meaning each time.

Not my cup of tea

I have read and enjoyed all of Pete Fromm's book but the foul language in If Not For This left me cold as it did everyone in our reading group. I doubt anyone in the group would have finished the book if we hadn't been reading it for a discussion. His ability to portray the challenges of dealing with MS not only for the patient but for the family was insightful. Despite the filthy language we were able to have a meaningful discussion,

a wonderful love story, I learned a lot about MS and loved the relationship berween husband and wife as well as the interaction with their children. highly recommend this book.

Think I am a little too old for this book. I wanted to parent these kids, made me anxious.
