Conte pastels
I am an artist. I absolutely love these pastels . I have professional grade soft pastels. But, I bought these because of the harder core and hoped the conte could be used for shading with my other other softer pastels. I also bought the conte pencil sharpener . Works well. The only complaint I have is with the Amazon packing. These pastels should be bubble wrapped. Once the core is broken the pencil is useless. Conte pencils work well with mixed medium.

Quite beautiful
These are beautiful, quality products. Thick, luscious core deposits bright pigment. Simply beautiful. My only complaint is around the confusing color naming. I bought the set of 48 but really got only 47 (one color was repeated). Not a real biggie per se maybe since I can buy the individual pencils too. The trick comes in trying to determine what was missing. #39 Red Garnet was repeated, and after an HOUR searching online I determined that missing was probably #19 Purple. They do say “assorted colors” so maybe not every set is identical. Pencils are identified only by number on the pencil, though the painted wood seems to reflect the inner pigment accurately. Some numbers are clearly permanently retired (no sign anywhere of #23, 25, 35, 36, 45) but this is probably normal as we have 48 colors in theory but some are labeled #49, 50, 51, 53, 54, 55). So that explains the absence of some numbers and the appearance of others. The names DO exist online but they can be vague, and some I completely disagree with. But they’re just names after all. I do recommend these pencils. A quality product from a reputable brand. I’m not a big hard pastel guy but wanted to buy the best I could afford.

Conte rocks!
These work like a pastel stick, with the neatness of using a pencil. They blend beautifully.

These are pastels, so…
Conté crayons are my favorite, especially the various sanguine variations. These, however, are true pastels, so if you know pastels, then you will know what you are getting. If you do not know how pastels act, then you may be puzzled at first by the granulation and the sharpening. Be patient. Conté is the best.

Pencils ok but...
The pastel pencils are OK, actually are very fine but the packaging it's not safe, the pencils arrive everywhere and some leads came broken.

Amazon Shipping was the problem with this purchase.
The product is of excellent quality but a few pencils were broken due to Amazon not adding any packing materials to the shipping box. The 48 Conte A' Paris Pastel Pencils bounced around freely in the larger shipping box during transit. It was sad to open and find tips broken off beautiful brand new pastel pencils. Hopefully Amazon Shipping will be advised of this less than adequate packing of a fragile item and change the way they pack pastels and pastel pencils in the future.

THICK
The core is made of chalk. Its twice as tick as most other color pencils! The lead seems to be better than the generals chalk pencils I’ve used but either one doesn’t break if you sharpen them with a knife….
