WD Purple Pro 12TB – The Hard Drive That Never Sleeps (Because It’s Watching You Sleep)
I bought this beast to drop into my Amcrest NVR system because apparently, my house needed the same level of surveillance as Fort Knox. Spoiler alert: it works perfectly — and now my house is basically the Truman Show, but with better resolution. 🎥 Why I Love This Drive: 12 Terabytes of "You Saw Nothing, Officer" Seriously, it holds weeks of 4K footage from multiple cameras, including the one pointed at my driveway that’s mostly squirrels doing parkour. Purpose-Built for Paranoia Designed for 24/7/365 surveillance workloads. No naps. No coffee breaks. Just pure, tireless storage of every Amazon delivery and mysterious leaf blower incident. Plug-and-Paranoia Installation Installed in my Amcrest NVR like it was born there. No firmware drama, no compatibility tantrums. Just silence... and a blinking light of judgment. Cooler Than Your Ex Runs quiet, stays cool, and doesn’t randomly ghost you like a desktop hard drive shoved into a job it wasn’t hired for. 512MB Cache = Smooth Playback Rewinding suspicious backyard activity in crisp HD has never been this satisfying. Even if it was just a raccoon again. 🧠 Final Thoughts: If you're serious about home security (or just want to capture footage of your neighbor stealing your trash cans), this is the drive. It’s like a security guard that never blinks and never asks for a raise. Buy it. Install it. Sleep easy — unless you're worried what it might've caught you doing

Reliable Performance, Quick Resolution
I recently purchased ten Western Digital 12TB WD Purple Pro surveillance drives for an extensive security project. Out of the box, I did encounter an unexpected issue: two of the drives were dead on arrival. However, I promptly reached out to customer support and received replacements without hassle. Once installed, the drives performed flawlessly. The WD Purple Pro series is specifically engineered for surveillance environments, and it shows—these drives run quietly and efficiently, handling constant writing and heavy workloads with ease. Recording high-definition video streams from multiple cameras has been seamless, and the storage capacity is ample for long-term retention. While initial failures were disappointing, the quick and professional replacement process reassured me of Western Digital’s commitment to customer service. The performance, reliability, and peace of mind these drives provide far outweigh the minor setback at the start.

Misleading Listing
Misleading Listing - Received Expired Enterprise Drive: The product page lists a brand-new WD Purple Pro with a 5-year warranty. However, the drive I received was an older enterprise-grade model with a manufacturer warranty that had already expired. This drive lacks the AllFrame AI technology specifically needed for surveillance. If you buy this, be sure to verify your serial number on WD's support site immediately.

Check your drives! Bad batches, risky investment for long delivery windows
I highly Recommend checking drives if buying NEW or USED. If you have a Windows PC, WesternDigital (WD) offers their own software to check their drives called "Western Digital Kitfox". Alternatively you can use "CrystalDiskInfo" (by CrystalMark Inc.). These check the overall health of the drive and to verify what you got is legitimate. If you want to simply check if drives connect and can be formatted, Windows has built-in software called "Disk Management", which is enough for the basics. For USED drives (which included Refurbished), you will likely have higher success if (1) KitFox or CrystalDiskInfo tells you they are in a good state and/or (2) You see reasonably low numbers for the "Power On Count" (or PoC; how many times the drive has been turned on) and "Power on Hours" (or PoH; how many hours the drive has been running) values. For NEW drives, the main thing that should looking for is that they actually connect and are detected by your system. If KitFox or CrystalDiskInfo cannot pull information from them, consider them Dead-on-Arrival (DoA), it's not worth your time trying to troubleshoot. Manufacturers rarely test drives NEW, but if they fix NEW drives themselves (Manufacturer Refurbish), the PoC and PoH values will be <10. From my personal experience with WD Purple Pro, buying NEW drives on Amazon is a gamble and I've bought USED with relatively better success. Risky investment for sure. WD knows this and that's why they provide Kitfox themselves. While I don’t like reviews based purchase/seller experience, it is unfortunately a window to the product itself. I updated this review based on the number of drives I have bought, details below. In 2025, I bought EIGHT 12TB Purple Pro drives. FIVE were bought NEW (due Amazon’s purchase limit) and the other THREE were bought USED. I ran each drive through CrystalDiskInfo and WD’s Kitfox to verify what I got. Results below. The THREE USED drives had a “Power on Count” (PoC) of 10, 16, and 3 respectively. Their “Power On Hours” (PoH) were 376, 335, and 17 respectively. Each were manufactured in May 2025. Serial Numbers matched. Passed all scans. The drives were clearly used beyond any reasonable manufacturer testing, yet Amazon listed it as “Used - Mint” and “Used - Very Good”. While arguably deceptive condition labels, Amazon themselves likely does NOT test drives functionality, rather they visually inspect/conduct cosmetic tests because the drives were clearly repackaged. Two of the USED drives were in antistatic bags and the third was in a basic ziploc. Visibly the drives had no damage, but fortunately the aforementioned software test tell you the rest and are designed for this scenario. The USED drives worked and for my purposes, I didn't consider the PoC and PoH values to be egregious, especially the one which was 3 and 17--which was shockingly repackaged the worst. The FIVE NEW drives each had a manufacturer's date of “15 Sep 2025”. CrystalDiskInfo could not detect them. Windows Disk Management showed a “Cyclic Redundancy Check” (CRC) error, and KitFox, while it detected the drives, it could not determine the capacity or run any scans or diagnostics. FOR ALL FIVE BRAND NEW drives. What dumb luck! Now one could spend hours or days trying to resolve this, if they are not pressed on time to get enterprise-grade drives set up. Or you could spend weeks or months battling RMAs. Most likely? Cut your losses fast, these units are dead if you see errors right out of the packaging. So...I could blame/fault either WD or Amazon based on my experience. (1) WD could have ensured I got working drives by providing quality assurance/test results within the box. Alternatively, let customer's know to test and what their options are, if things don’t work out, right in the box. Or, (2) the fault entirely on Amazon for selling harddrives, not reacting to complaints, continually selling bad batches as “In Stock” and bonus rewards, and fails to have "In Stock" delivery windows within reasonable times. By the time you do get the drives from Amazon, you may realize you should have bought drives elsewhere instead. Total Stars: 2 out of 5 [-2 Stars] because Amazon does not sell sensitive tech well and are hurting manufacturer credibility as a result. [-1 Star] because the NEW drives were Dead-on-Arrival (DoA) and buying specialized high capacity drives should not be a gamble. [+0.5 Stars] because WD does package their NEW drives really well and drives are constructed with quality and purpose. They are my go-to harddrive brand, even if this NEW WD Purple Pro drive experience was bad. I'll still recommend them. [+1.5 Stars] because the USED drives enlightened me to check what I got and I am happy that WD themselves provide "Kitfox". Plus, all three USED drives worked against the odds and expectations.
