Petit little tub of lye
I'm not gonna lie, I thought this Miilex Food Grade Lye Sodium Hydroxide was going to be bigger based on the photos. However, I didn't know how much volume 1lb of lye was so I'm glad I got 1lb instead of 50lbs. The bottle is a cute 4 inches across and fits neatly inside my cupboard for drain cleaning and powerful caustic scrubbing. I do want to try making authentic Bavarian pretzels for Oktoberfest but will wait for the fall. The granules are small, evenly shaped and easy to use. The cap is child resistant and secures tightly to prevent spills. For cleaning drains and dissolving proteins this lye functions perfectly and is a good value if you only want a wee bit of the stuff for certain jobs. If you were doing commercial work a 50lb bucket of the stuff is much cheaper but I use this very sparingly.

Great for pretzels
Great for making pretzels, and pretzel bread. Be careful to not soak more than 15 seconds Per side. It is real acid, and can soak in the bread.

Not good for soap making
Beads were so tiny. They spilled everywhere trying to pour into a container.

Many Uses If Handled Carefully
I didn't get this for making soap...though it will end up being used for that by my son who does make soap. I got this to use to open up the traps in my girls bathroom. Young ladies with long hair can really clog up the works and they tend not to say anything until extraordinary measures need to be taken. I remember my father using this stuff back when I was little and shared a bathroom with 2 older sisters, so I thought I'd give it a shot as the other drain cleaners didn't do the trick. This material did work better than the liquid drain cleaner, but I needed to treat the pipes multiple times (instructions say if it doesn't work after 2 tries, call a plumber) but I did it a couple of times every other day for a week and it did improve the drainage but not as much as I had hoped. Just be careful when using this lye. I wore a long sleeve shirt, used nitrile gloves and safety glasses to avoid getting any on me or anything else...you just want it going down the drain, The instructions say not to use it with any other chemicals, which seems like a good idea. I'm no chemist and imagine of these drain cleaners are dangerous if not used properly. Mixing them is a bad idea...so before I try the other cleaners again, I'll give it plenty of time for this to completely wash out of the system.
