A must-read for any team leader
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni is an essential guide for any team leader seeking to elevate their collective performance. Lencioni artfully employs a fable-style narrative to outline the five dysfunctions that commonly plague teams: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. His storytelling approach isn’t just engaging—it helps put complex ideas into practical, relatable contexts. The fable gives life to these dysfunctions, allowing readers to understand them not as abstract concepts, but as real issues impacting real people. One of the aspects I appreciated most about Lencioni’s work was his focus on the emotional and relational aspects of team dynamics. This approach highlights that in the end, a team’s performance rests heavily on the interpersonal relationships and trust within it. Lencioni doesn’t promise a quick fix—quite the opposite. He acknowledges that building a functional, cohesive team is hard work, requiring ongoing effort and diligence. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a must-read for any team leader. It serves as a wake-up call, shedding light on the often-ignored problems that hold back our teams and providing practical, applicable solutions to these challenges. No matter your industry or team size, Lencioni’s book is sure to equip you with valuable insights to bring your team to the next level.

Good Ad for Atlas Shrugged
The author makes some valid points worth considering, but it's all undermined by his scapegoating of the mkt gal, who was the one clearly qualified member of the team. When we get to scapegoating the smart, competent people, we start wandering into the land of Ayn Rand and "Atlas Shrugged."

I bought this book for myself because I have been a long time manager of small teams and have, at times, struggled with getting some team members on board. When I purchased the book I was taking over the leadership of a very dysfunctional team and was at my wits end with some of the team members. There was a lack of trust among team members and it was holding the team back. I could not have identified and overcome the problems we had without the knowledge and practices I learned in this book. Although it took time (a year!) and a lot of energy, we succeeded in making the team highly efficient, even when working on very challenging projects. Highly recommend that managers who care about having a cohesive, enjoyable and productive team read this book

I have read lots of books on team building. Patrick Lencioni’s book is the best one that I have read on the subject. Anyone who manages a team and is struggling with issues like trust, conflict and accountability should read it right away. People issues are messy. Difficult to articulate and explain. But the diagnosis of what dysfunctions damage a team and how they are connected to each other is done with elegant precision in this book. You just accept it without any ifs and buts. There are essentially 5 of them. Trust. Conflict. Commitment. Accountability. Attention to results. The writer also provides an assessment test to measure how dysfunctional any team is. He gives detailed notes on the symptoms and the steps one can take to address each one of the 5 dysfunctions. This entire framework is nicely woven into a fable which makes it easy for you to understand and internalise their concepts. If you don’t have time for the book, then just check out the YouTube video. You will be hooked.
