Merchants of Doubt

Very well made and a real eye-opener. Will revolutionise your awareness of how we have been manipulated by the professional sowing of seeds of doubt as to the reality of scientific facts, whether of tobacco or fire retardants causing ill-health/death, or human influence in the rise of global warming. Sadly, such films rarely get aired by the main broadcasting networks, so their messages remain hidden from the general public. What a pity such films aren't part of the school curriculum, perhaps then our planet might have a fighting chance and the future wouldn't only be for the 'wealthy' minority.

Shows how divise American politics is, and how this has caused such an awful scenario, which will effect us all.A country which had been a leader on this subject but a few have sowed doubt, and not with it seems an justification.

Very informative film, exposing how commercial interests influence government policy. Interviews people from all sides of the climate debate, full of facts but also humorous: well made, light touch, not didactic. While it deals mainly with climate change issues, the mechanisms it exposes are applicable to all aspects of public life. Well worth watching

A must-watch for anyone interested in how big business and corporate interests in some circles contrive to debunk science, starting with the tobacco industry and more recently climate change

I would give the book this film is based on 5 Stars, it is excellent. I liked how the film begins with the magician discussing how these scientists use the honest tricks of his trade dishonestly. However, the rest of the film doesn't really follow the same structure as the book. For instance the book starts with a discussion of Ben Santer, but in the film Santer doesn't appear until over an hour into the film. I would also liked to have seem Oreskes and Conway have more of a prominent role in the film. Oreskes only appears a couple of times giving a few interviews, I think if she was in the film consistently throughout the message would have had more of an impact. I think the story is fascinating and agree with everything in the film, I just feel that given its potential, it could have been a lot more powerful.

While the cover is for the German version the DVD has the english narrative. I show this to my environmental science students to see some of the techniques used to manufacture doubt.

Literally everyone should watch this

Dieser Film ist wichtig, sehr wichtig - präzise, gut recherchiert und gut erklärt deckt er die Manipulationsmechanismen auf, mit denen Tabakindustrie, chemische Industrie und Ölkonzerne die öffentliche Meinung manipulieren. Wer sich immer fragte, woher die Klimaleugner kommen - hier ist die Antwort: aus Exxon-gesponsorten sogenannten "Think-Tanks".

Ce film présente de manière très clair comment les industries produisant des choses toxiques se défendent, alors qu'il existe un consensus scientifique, en créant une confusion médiatique à l'aide d'agence de com, dont les mercenaires n'ont pas peur de porter des coups bas.C'est le pendant documentaire de la fiction 'thank you for smoking', à regarder absolument!

Jaw dropping revelations, every American and every person on earth should watch and learn. Watch it not once but several times, then donate it to your local library (or better, buy another to donate). In light of recent findings that flame retardants are a primary cause of the thyroid cancer epidemic, the information in this movie is even more astounding. It is curious how difficult it is to buy this dvd on Amazon, with search not working quite right, format warnings that it may not play in the US, and every rising price. Was 15 bucks initially. Are making dvds, blueray discs costs going up, as the price is now 20. One would think if demand is rising so much, it shouldnt be too hard or more expensive to press more discs, to the contrary it should be getting cheaper. There is a dvd and a blueray disc in this package. It is not an understatement to say life on earth depends on earthlings seeing this movie and taking action so pay the 20, pay the 30 just so the information gets out....as the impediments for getting it out grow curiouser and curiouser.
