Y201 Portable Battery Powered Methane Propane Combustible Natural Gas Leak Sniffer Detector

We had a very slight gas smell in the basement, so I called the gas company to respond. After checking all of the pipes in the house, they located several small leaks going to fireplace unit. It appears the installer hand fit everything and forgot to tighten the black pipe joints, as several were literally finger tight when we took them apart! Had new installer come out and disassembled entire line and reassembled tightly! Now that I was paranoid, I ordered this unit to 'recheck' all of the gas line for peace of mind. We also found an additional leak in the floor valve for the fireplace, and replaced it as well. Now at this point, I was really paranoid, so I took this instrument and went around to carefully recheck every gas connection in the house! The unit does detect very trace amounts of gas, in fact, it would detect on my thumb that I stuck inside one of the pipes to wipe out some extra joint dope. I had the gas company out to the house twice to check for leaks and the repairs that were done. They checked everything, now three times, and the all clear was issued. I went around the next day to recheck everything, and when I was at the hot water tank, this instrument went off. I carefully worked around the pipe, and narrowed it to the gas clean out leg t- joint. I took it apart, and found that it too, was loose! I cleaned, reinstalled everything, and now have NO readings at all. This unit works quite well. I am impressed that it picked up what the gas company did not with their expensive testers! To set the sensitivity, let unit warm up until light goes out then rotate dial up until unit sounds. Then dial back down just enough to get the lights and sound to stop. You should hear the 'pulse' going. Now start checking joints. Leave unit at joints for 5-10 seconds each. If you have a leak, this thing will let you know! I am more than impressed for this price point that this unit actually works quite well! I have peace of mind again! This is a must have device for anyone that has any gas or propane appliance in their home. We built this house 14 years ago, and haven't had any reason to check the pipes. I will be checking now as part of routine maintenance! Get one, it just might save your health or even your home! We have no idea how long these joint may have been leaking into the house! Thanks for great product at reasonable price. I do know that these units don't last for more than a few years as the sensitivity goes down, but for the price this is an excellent unit. Get one!

I had been smelling gas in our house ever since we moved in more than 2 1/2 years ago. Nobody else in my family was bothered by it, but it bothered me immensely! Everyone kept saying it was normal to smell a little gas when you use the oven or stove, but it didn't seem normal to me & it made me nauseous. I could smell it all the time, even when the oven & stove hadn't been used at all. I bought this little device to confirm my suspicions that the gas was actually leaking. It was very easy to use & worked perfectly! One little tip: at first I didn't find anything & wondered if it was working at all, so we tested it with a Bic lighter as other reviewers have mentioned & discovered that the sensitivity was turned down too low, so go ahead & turn it up until that first red light comes on & the ticking stops or nearly stops. We located the leak coming from a worn out connection on the back of the oven. Fixed the connection, no more leak & no more nasty smell! The only downside to this device is that it doesn't tell you how much gas is present, only that the gas is there. This is not really an issue though since I only needed it to confirm that the leak was there (and convince my family!) before calling the gas company to come out & check it. The gas company was able to use their more advanced device to determine that the leak was very small & luckily it was not terribly dangerous. Even if I hadn't found a leak, it would have given me peace of mind just to know for sure. This device can detect many types of gas & I will continue to use it regularly to monitor for any other issues. The house we rent is very old & has plumbing issues, so I expect the ability to test for sewer gas will also come in handy. I wish I had gotten this device sooner & not suffered so long! I highly recommend it to anyone who may suspect they have even a very small leak. Small leaks can turn into bigger leaks & become dangerous, so it is always better to be safe than sorry!
