Replaced Exp First Alert Smoke Detectors w/New
I just installed these 2 First Alert smoke detectors, so I canāt give you a long time use review, but Iām happy with my purchase. These replaced two 10 year-old similar First Alert smoke detectors that had reached their expiration date. I was very pleased with those, which is why I looked for the same smoke detectors. I couldnāt find the exact same ones, so I replaced with these, which look similar and are basic like the first pair. Although the size of the new ones are a little bit smaller than the ones they replaced, I was pleased to find that the new brackets fit the 2 screws I already had in the walls from the old ones. I was concerned that I would be patching and drilling, but I didnāt have to, so installation was easy peezy. The other thing that is different on the new ones is that the batteries are 9 V versus the AAs for the old ones. I prefer AAs because itās a battery that I always have around the house and they are easy to come by and inexpensive, relatively speaking. However, the new detectors came with batteries, so I donāt have to worry about replacing them for another year.

These work so well, they know when I'm making toast
Great value, high quality, function well - ask my toast how I know. They are loud enough to wake the dead, which is good because I am a heavy sleeper. They fit in the same frame as my old smoke detectors.

Update batteries to alkaline
Alarms arrived promptly and in good condition, packaged well. One caveat though, I highly recommend that you switch out the provided heavy duty 9 V batteries with your own fresh alkaline batteries. Reason being, one of the three detectors that I installed immediately started beeping a low battery warning, and upon testing the provided battery, it wasn't dead but it was very weak. The other two with the provided battery tested very strongly and were good batteries. Bottom line, pull the heavy duties, use them in something besides a smoke detector, and slap in some alkalines just to be safe. Great smoke detectors though, for sure.

Worth the money
Wonderful! Easy to install and the detector easily attaches to the base. Spending a little more is well worth not having installation issues!!!

They work great
These work very well. They were easy to install, the size is good and they are sensitive to smoke. The one in our kitchen occasionally goes off while cooking which does not bother me.

Fortunately, haven't had to test these against both types of fires. I could replicate a self-test and just haven't gotten around to doing it. What I can say is the batteries need replacing a lot more frequently. Have at least 5 of these in my house and I they beep for a change every 3 months. I could've let the more common, ionization smoke alarms go for years without a battery replacement. I was pretty good about changing them, but there were a few times I'd forgotten over 40 years and never had alarms screaming at me for new batteries frequently. Hope they do work. Ive been through a fire and the type of fire alarm I had was designed to pick up direct ionization fires and mine was a photoelectric fire. Half my upper floor was immersed in smoke and destroyed and the ionization alarm didnt pick it up. Ever since, Ive followed the fire dept's advice and use dual smoke alarm. Hopefully, if will never happen again, cause I'm counting on these to actually detect fires quickly.

I bought a new alarm from Amazon, it arrived quickly and then I did something I wouldn't normally do ... I check the manufacture date. The unit was 6 years old!!!! The sensors in the alarms degrade over time from date of manufacture. Why would anyone pay for a smoke alarm that has a 10 year life span and only get 4 years of use of it? RETURNED.
