No app required, just a good product that works well
I like it! Very heavy duty, with no frills. The gear case is actually cast aluminum and the tool just feels right, a very rare example of a current product offering that is based on good design. I applaud Makita for staying true, thanks for not making an app necessary to drill a hole.

Makita drill on point
Makita drill is on point. Works excellent of course, is tough and very powerful for driving or drilling. Nice ergonomic grip and not too light but allso not too heavy, just solid. I've used it extensively and is one of my go to tools when building things. This is tool only so have a battery on handle or you will have to buy a battery. This does not drain battery life too much either. Just runs and runs.

Great drill motor lots of torque
Love this drill. Bought my first one in a package with a saw and 3 other tools over 20 years ago. This is a replacement for my original that I broke. I was boring a 3 1/2 inch hole through my cinder block basement wall when the boring bit broke and bound up in the hole. I was stupidly using the drill with just my left hand and the bind caused the drill to torque twisting my wrist and fracturing my ulna. It also stripped reverse out of the drill After 20 years still had a lot of torque. I ordered this one( same model) right after I got back from the ER but didn't get to use it for 8 weeks.

I wanted to like it, then didn't like it, and now I like it
Short version - This is not a cordless version of an old-school 3/8" hammer drill. Don't expect that level of performance in masonry. Over the years I've used and owned several hammer drills and rotary hammers, professionally and around the home, from Ryobi and Harbor Freight to Makita, Bosch and Hilti. My normal go-to is a 7/8 SDS plus Makita cordless, and I love that. I have 4 Makita drills, counting this one, and I love them all but this one. This I just like. I bought this as a smaller, lighter weight hammer drill that would work for small bits for masonry anchors, and that would use plain shank hammer drill bits. I used to use 3/8" corded hammer drills for that on job sites in the past, and they worked great. This is not that. It really doesn't hammer, a better description is that it vibrates. It buzzes. With a typical store brand masonry hammer bit, using it the way I was used to with previous drills it just makes noise and barely will make a dimple in concrete. Almost returned it after that, but gave it another chance. I bought a bosch hex shank impact bit, and tried that bit in this drill, and in an SDS plus drill with an adapter. IF you push on the drill with some force, enough to bend a 5/32 bit a little, it will drill. At full speed It drills at half the speed of the SDS running at about half speed, but it does drill. Light pressure and cheap bits do NOT work with this drill in masonry. As a regular drill, the balance is, to me, a little weird. With the pressure you have to use while hammer drilling, I can see how regular bits will slip in the chuck. But with Bosch hex impact bits, in sizes from 1/8 to 1/4", it does work just fine, if a little slow. In closing, I would not recommend this as anyone's only drill. If you really can't afford two nice drills, buy a decent quality regular 3/8 or 1/2" cordless drill, and buy a no-name or inexpensive corded 1/2" or any SDS-plus hammer drill. This is a niche tool for pros or others who want a compact cordless drill for masonry.
