Worth knowing: The carob tree is an evergreen 5-10 metres tall tree with leathery leaves and an ornamental, gnarled treetop. It is very popular to cultivate this easy to care for, slow-growing plant as a tub plant or bonsai within our regions. The tree is completely undemanding and there are no diseases or pests known. The seeds served as a unit of weight, which is still used in today's jewellery trade and is known as carat (= 0,18 gr.). In Austria, the so-called carob coffee is obtained from pods. Embryo-free seeds are traded as locust bean gum and the fruits are popularly used as horse feed which makes this beautiful, shade-producing plant both an ornamental plant as well as a crop.

Origin: The carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region.

Propagation: Roughen the relatively hard-shelled seeds with sandpaper, leave to soak in water overnight and press them about 1 cm deep into cultivation soil afterwards. This will reduce the time for germination to 10-30 days.

Place / Light: Although small plants love full sun, they will also thrive well in shade.

Care: The carob tree is very dry resistant, therefore water rather moderately and let the soil dry in between waterings. Since the plant is growing slowly, it does also require little nutrients. Tub plant fertilizer supply every 4 weeks from April until September will suffice. Some seedlings will grow as single shoots at first, others branch out by themselves.

Winter period: Being an evergreen plant, the carob tree should be moved in a bright indoor position (living room, winter garden, corridor or greenhouse) during winter. A cellar room is less suitable. Temperatures between 5°-15°C are ideal. Water only sporadically, do not let the soil dry out completely.
