I had to purchase this book simply because my 4th great grandfather John Mason was one of the 3rd foot guards defending the Hougoumont farm, at the Battle of Waterloo. John Mason was just 20 years old, he lost his left hand and was wounded in his right side during the battle, but he survived and I have seen his discharge papers dated Oct 1815 (quite amazing to seem them) John returned home to his Staffordshire village of Bradley and married Elizabeth in 1818 in his village church. They had eight children, their 2nd child Henry was my 3rd gt grandfather. John Mason died in 1870 he was 75 years old. He is buried in the village churchyard. I feel very proud of my ancestor. I have just had a quick look through the book when it arrived, and what I find interesting are the letters etc in the pockets within the book, one of the letters is from a 3rd foot guard, he could have been a friend of John Mason. I am sure I shall thoroughly enjoy reading this book. It is about the sixth book I have purchased on Waterloo since finding out about my ancestor

My Waterloo Campaign
As a schoolboy I loved history, the kings and queens, battles etc type of history. I would cycle to the local library and take out books about Waterloo mainly to stare at all the well known evocative paintings and I did some reading of course. For a time I collected the Airfix plastic figures and reenacted the battle with my few dozen soldiers. When I was about 13 the history being taught in school changed to social and economic and it almost killed my love for the subject. Prior to that I had always wanted to become a history teacher.Anyway, after a lifetime of bringing up children and taking family holidays, that kind of thing, I've now retired. This has given me the opportunity to make trips to places that have always held a fascination to me.This is how my trip in February 2024 to the Waterloo battlefield came about. I am in the process of editing my adventures into the YouTube series I've called "My Waterloo Campaign". The series gathers momentum as the episodes pass and I would like to share these with as many people as possible. If you know anybody who may be interested please would you share the videos. I rely totally on my schoolboy knowledge so there will be errors and I do ask for help in the films, on occasion, especially on reading matter. Since returning I have ordered several books but would welcome suggestions particularly those that are based on eye witness accounts. I have received Peter & Dan Snow's "Battle of Waterloo" so this will be one of the first books I read since returning. I intend to make up for all the "lost" years after I stopped reading about the Napoleonic era.So please have a look at my series and please don't judge me too harshly. I hope you can enjoy the films for what they are and yes any information that you could add would be very much welcomed.

A beautifully presented and designed book which is a pleasure to own and read. Well written with interesting background chapter on the background history leading upto the Battle. The illustrations are superb and very much bring the various stages of the Battle to life. A most worthy and authoritative addition to the many previous books on the subject. Commemorates Waterloo's 200th Anniversary.

A close run battle, if only eh.
Excellent book, with some great insights and references to what has to be the most definitive battle of the 19th century.

Brilliant book and well worth the money
Brilliant book and well worth the money. Not too difficult to follow and not boring. The pockets with duplicate maps and letters made it very interesting. My husband loved this book and has lent it to his friends who also commented how good it is.

2 versions of this book
Bought for my dads birthday. Just watch aw there are two versions of the book. One has pullouts like letters etc the other is the version I bought which is a hardcopy. Great book but some people might find it more like a "coffee table" read given the amount if detailed text.

Good Read
I would highly recommend this book, it is well written and has some really good illustrations and maps, making it easy to understand what went on at this momentous battle. The quality of the books is really worth the price.
