Q: Hi,i hve spent a week looking at telescope's. i am not sure what to get. i need something that will show the moon in detail and planets too

I've been an amateur astronomer for many years & have tried all sorts of binoculars & telescopes & made do with a pair of 10x50 prismatic binoc's for most of the time. I made a 2-inch refractor & an equatorial mount but found it very limited. Patrick Moore always recommended a refractor of at least 3-inches object glass for any sort of astronomical work & to shop around for something of this size as there are a lot of awful products on the market that try to make you buy with impressive-sounding magnifications completely beyond the power of the object glass to cope with (no more than x40 magnification per inch of object glass, hence approx.. x120 for a 3-inch). As a beginner don't try to go any bigger than a 3-inch. Celestron are a fairly good manufacturer & their 70mm or 90mm object glass telescopes are likely to be quite satisfactory. A large reflector has some alignment problems & the mirror will need resurfacing from time to time - not really something a sometime amateur will want to deal with, so I would always opt for a refractor.
