At the new reduced price it is worth getting. Amazing image quality.
This is a very advanced camera. Sony have tried to make it accessible to the ‘Vlogger’ market but I can’t see many first time buyers spending almost £2000 on a camera body. Some of the Vine reviews are frankly wrong in technical detail, and this shows the beginner won’t necessarily understand the product. I would not recommend a beginner or start up Youtuber buying this when you can buy an excellent camera like the Nikon Z30 for a third of the price. It’s an overkill camera for someone starting out and whilst it can be used as a point and shoot, you won’t get the most out of it and are likely to be overwhelmed when trying to go more advanced with it if new to camera and filming. This has the same sensor in it as some cameras costing £3000+ and is professional level. It also has some of the latest features trickled down from an almost £4000 camera, notably the autofocus. People say it overheats which it probably does if you are filming 4k 30fps 10 bit continuously for 45 mins plus, or filming 4k 120 for more than 10 mins but most of its intended market will never do this. I’ve never seen it overheat but haven’t had it that long. You’ll see loads of videos on YouTube about using it in SLOG 3 in 10 bit 4:2:2 and colour grading. Note to do this requires high skill level (relatively speaking) and setting up the shot using the correct native dual ISO etc. otherwise the footage looks a grainy mess even after colour grade. I don’t have the time, or inclination. Fortunately the camera produces great out of camera results at S Cinelog, which is on picture profile 11. If you don’t know what I’m talking about then don’t buy this camera, learn on something cheaper first, like a Z30 or ZVE10 as if you don’t understand this, the camera is too high level for you at the moment. However, if you know what you are doing or know what it’s all about and want to move onto doing more compex things, this camera produces unbelievable results. Basically unless you are going to spend £5000 on a camera, you will struggle to beat the picture quality. That makes it something of a bargain now if you are a non professional who will not need very long recording times. The autofocus is also probably the best on any camera at any price, in fact it definitely is. When I set it on ‘insect’ it followed a very small fast moving bee switching between flowers for example. I am delighted with the footage gained so far, it is for people who want the best of the best quality, but again this camera is overkill for many. If you are a keen hobbyist seeking the best picture quality in a compact package, this could be for you. Recommend not getting the kit lens which doesn’t do the camera justice (it’s OK) and buy something like the 24mm F2.8 G lens as a great all rounder starter lens with fantastic image quality.

USB port and microphone ports are unreliable
This is an incredible camera but plagued with reliability problems. On my first camera the USB port and microphone port stopped working after a few months, I thought maybe I wasn't being gentle enough with it. On the second one (brand new), I was EXTREMELY careful, I used a small-rig battery with USB-C to avoid using the built in USB-C for charging, I used the microphone maybe 4-5 times and... it has failed after 4 months or so, nothing at all from the microphone ports or the USB-C port. Booked a repair with Sony :( Edit: Sony fixed it under warranty saying it was a loose ribbon cable, they said it’s not a common problem. Hopefully the repair will last.
