Does anyone recommend putting a nutrient rich base layer of something down 1st and then capping with this stuff?

Dear Gary,definitely NOT.This is a nutrient rich gravel, there is absolutely no need to put any soil or other chemical stuff underneath. The big advantage is that you have the full fertilizer effect on a natural base and for an unlimited life span, so why risk the advantages by mixing with something with the known disadvantages, e.g. soil that stops working after 1-2 years?Let us know if we can help with any other information.
