Worth knowing: A native of South Africa, the evergreen shrub grows to 2 metres tops and is also known under the name “balloon cotton plant“ or “swan plant“. Numerous white flowers develop in drooping tufts from May until July. The yellow-green fruits look blown-up and once they burst open, the seeds appear hanging on silky hairs. The shrub is winter-hardy in regions of southern Europe and is also used as a medicinal plant for curing hay fever. The silky seed hairs are too smooth and too fragile and cannot be used. In South Africa, the fruits are often used for Christmas decoration. They are simply sprayed with silver paint and hung on the Christmas tree.

Origin: The milkweed is indigenous to South Africa.

Propagation: The milkweed, also known as balloon cotton plant, can easily be raised from seeds. Cover the quite large seeds thinly with cultivation soil, dampen the soil and keep evenly moist until germination, which - at temperatures of 15°-20°C – can be carried out successfully within 14 days.

Place / Light: Full sunny places are suited best. The heavier the sunlight, the stronger the colour of the flowers.

Care: Supply the milkweed with plenty of water during its growing period. Tub plant fertilizer is also recommended from May until September, so that the plant will branch out stronger and won't grow sparsely. Bloom is also heavier and longer then. Prune younger plants 2-3 times in order to support ramification.

Winter period: Water less during the winter months and choose a place with surrounding temperatures of 10°-15°C. Too much water results in soil fungi and will let the plant die. A bright place with sufficient light and air motion is ideal.
