My favorite potting soil
Included a photo of the bale, in case you're unsure just how much you're purchasing here. This product is a L O T of soil. And it's compressed in the packaging, so as you break it up it expands. I can't math, but you're looking at probably 30-40 gallons of soil. Anyway, I collect/grow/sell plants as a sort of side business, and Sungro is the only brand I'll use anymore. Both the #2 and the #4 are excellent quality soil, and I usually add chunks of orchid bark, charcoal and worm castings to it (but you don't need to, it's fine by itself). Highly recommend it, and you're certainly getting your money's worth. The only person that will be unhappy with your purchase is the unsuspecting delivery guy that has to carry it to your porch - it's super heavy.

My favorite medium for creating my own organic soils
My favorite medium for creating my own organic soils. I use this as a base for every soil I make for my plants. I then add additives to it depending on the type of plant, adjust the PH according to each plant, etc. The soil has a neutral PH, anti-fungals, etc So you will not get any diseases, or pests from this medium. If you are trying to make a super-soil. (Hot Organic Compost Soil) This is what you want to use as a base, and you get ALOT for the price. Essentially, you can add organic additives to this to make your super soil compost, or you can add them and simply stick your plant in it, and use bacterial compost teas to slowly decompose your additives throughout your plant's life. This soil can also be used as a totally soil-less medium. It works the same way as hydroponics since there is zero nutrients in the 'soil' it'self, you would feed it in the exact same manner as a hydroponics setup. You have full control of every nutrient it receives, and what nutrients it gets at exact stages in it's growth. If you are a very exacting, and advanced grower, this is probably the best use of this soil.

OMG! This is great!
For years I have been mixing my own potting soil. Adding perlite, manure/guano (aged), sphagnum or coir, mycorrhizae, etc... But this is so much better & cheaper in the long run. Everything is already added including the mycorrhizae fungi to help the plants absorb nutrients. The smell when you open the package is of good, clean earth. And it is so silky & light to handle it. *be prepared, the volume expands after you start working with it. Getting to know and learn from a wonderful couple like Patty & Wayne Chalmers at "Spring Hill Farms" in Canada who post on YouTube (they have a farm, nursery, tomato/cucumber house & Hydroponics greenhouses). And they never mind answering questions or sharing information. Patty uses this soil straight from the package for potting up plants to grow for sale. She also uses this soil in her nursery & tomato/cucumber houses too. I used this to put new Boysenberry plants in the ground and they never skipped a beat. Would I use again? Absolutely. Would I reccomend this to family or friends? Yes.

and you pay a good price for good dirt and this shows up
I order this brand of dirt because the bag I comes in is sealed and the high quality ingredients. When your bag of dirt shows up and it's completely taped up, dirt falling everywhere, and you pay a good price for good dirt and this shows up. It's not like this would be used for outdoor use or it wouldn't be an issue.

Use only this.
This planting mix is absolutely great for everything from raised vegetable beds to raised rose, ornamental, berry, etc beds. It is light and does not compact heavily. Plenty of nutrients. Easy to work with. And plants love it. Have transplanted many many seedlings and small plants into this and it is great. Do not know about using it to start plants. Maybe try next year as it is so good for everything else.

Good for First Grow
I used this for my first grow. I could physically see and touch when the soil is dry from a distance. I used other soils where you can't really tell and it end up killing your plants. It retains water very well, but it is extremely dense soil.
