I'd say 7 or older, however due to potential feedback through headphones which could harm hearing. Ensure the volume is set to it's lowest before using it.

How well does it work at reducing noise from outside the cone of the parabola? Like will noises off to the sides be amplified too?

Using the “sight” on top that is where the amplified sound will come from. At the side is virtually negligible. You can hear stuff but only when nothing is happening ‘on target’
