Jackson's Hallmarks, Pocket edition: English Scottish Irish Silver & Gold Marks From 1300 to the Present Day

I bought this book several years ago to help identify hallmarks on various gold and silver items for a small second hand business that I was involved with for a time. It really does seem to be comprehensive and allowed me and my partner to identify the age and manufacturer of a good number of items. The pocket size of the book is really good for making it portable and accordingly easily stowed away when doing the rounds at everything from antiques fairs to car boot sales. The content of the book, including the pictures of the hallmarks is clearly laid out and pretty easy to read for a book of its size. Even taking aside the book’s use in business and in valuing collectables, it is quite fascinating to understand something of the history of the gold and silver trade and how these marks were designed to confirm what would now be called “the provenance” of items made with precious metals. The paperback version of this book is excellent value for money and very useful if you need to examine hallmarked items.

I returned book because it had no useful information regarding my particular items, BUT this is a very thorough book and I think most collecters would get a lot of use out of it. Must have been a huge amount of work to put this together. Excellent.
