The Ultimate Guide to Singing: Gigs, Sound, Money and Health

The book is nicely paced. You can either read through it or jump to different chapters for ideas or advice. The fact that TC Helicon are endorsing it and also commissioned it to go alongside their products shows they look at the bigger picture as you do NOT need to have their products to use the book. Its a general guide. There is something for all abilities to learn from in this book, even the more experienced vocalist will find something of use. Despite the size of the book (page-wise) there is very little 'fat' in it. All the information will be useful at various stages and abilities. They've managed to avoid being to "American" based as there are quite a lot Europeans interviewed which gives it a more balanced view. TC-H have done things in a 360 degree way. They've built and designed their own microphones, monitors, vocal fx pedals, vocal apps, tuition videos, a Kindle version of the book is available,product upgrades .... it never ends .. Now they've built their own guide to singing and paid the same attention to detail as thy do when building their other products.

When this book arrived I was amazed by its sheer size and the amount of information that is packed into it. It's easy to read yet contains stuff for both experienced singers and beginners (like myself). I've read a few books like this and would definitely recommend it over any of the others as it covers many more areas than I've seen in books before. I'm only half way through (it's a big book!) and have found loads of useful things in it that I didn't know before and hope will help me improve my singing and gigs.

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in a music related career. In fact it can be applied to many careers & occupations. There is plentiful useful advice about commitment, self-promotion, working with others etc. I wish it had been around years ago.

Helped with singing...

This is totally worth the 20 bucks I paid for it. I bought it because it talks about singing specifically in the practical context of performing--not just how to sing, but, for example, how to not trash your voice when you're doing a lot of gigs, how to manage your PA/mic/etc, how to develop your sound, etc. Another reason I like it is because of all the contributers. Beardyman, Schlomo, Reggie Watts and others talk very matter-of-factly about doing what works and doing what doesn't. There's a real sense that you're talking shop with great performers. So far, the best part for me is the user-friendly discussion about the use of equipment; I have a voice coach who is wonderful, but we work on singing, not using a mic, using loopers, how to gauge use of things like gain and delay effects. I still don't know what the difference between gain and level is, but this books talks about how to use it to the best of your advantage. I could go on but I will just end with strongly recommend this book if you want a solid, practical source of instruction on everything about singing and performing, all in one spot. It will not, however, replace a voice coach. But it actually says that in the book.

Das Buch ist somit nicht nur für Sänger, sondern auch für Produzenten, Tontechniker, Manager und Musiker anderer Instrumente sehr interessant, die Gesang besser verstehen wollen. Auch Dinge, an die man als Sänger vielleicht nicht sofort denkt, die aber wichtig sind, werden angesprochen und gut erklärt. Leider sind aufgrund der inhaltlichen Vielfalt die Kapitel zum Thema Stimmbildung und Stimmpflege etwas dünn ausgefallen, hier sollte man ergänzende Literatur anschaffen. Trotzdem: Sehr empfehlenswert!

I have no doubt that The Ultimate Guide to Singing will be of help to any who choose to purchase this book. As a closet musician who uses a home recording studio, I can only say that there definitely will be worthy material of interest depending on your needs. For some it will be basic, and for others it will be more complete, especially for those who wish to take singing to the higher level with a business connection. This book is great even for a hobbiest who may find that their talent has been unlocked for the professional stage. Having worked closely with musicians, vocalists, and studios, I can say that this book hits the mark in a number of areas . . . but, it should be known that a lot of the written material has been posted elsewhere (my reason for 4 and not 5 stars). However, it's great to have all the relative material in one convenient place. Most of all, it can help you (and maybe even me) to become a better singer.
