Q: Can this be used on a radiator?

I have looked on the tin and done a bit of research as well. The tin says: good for bare or rusty iron and steel. For use on aluminium, galvanised and non-ferrous metals, use other products. This is where it gets tricky, old, pre 1970s radiators used cast iron and steel. After the 1970s, a lot of modern radiators use copper pipes with aluminium fins. So, just check your radiators. I just did a test of my modern ones (2007) and the fins look like they are inside and using a magnet on the outside (which stuck) I reckon that is steel. I would therefore assume I can use the Hammerite here. So, just do a magnet check and if you are happy you can try that. Have a look on the Hammerite website also. I did, my initial findings were that they were just selling the gloss top coat. You can research this more yourself if you like. Just remember though as I have stated above, the tin says this is good for iron & steel bare or rusty metal but NOT for aluminium, galvanised or non-ferrous metals (use another product for these). Probably. I don't know how it behaves at high temperatures but the outside of your engine shouldn't get too much over 100C.

Yes you can. I rubbed down the metal first, no dust, nothing but metal, then used the primer. The next day, first coat of white, which did not cover the red oxide perfectly; but a second coat 6 hours later gave a marvellous finish. I've just bought some more, to do up our old iron garden bench.

I wouldn't use this if the door is smooth/new bare metal.
