Do Not Underestimate This Router! It's a must have!!
This thing is a beast. Full stop. Welcome to enterprise-grade routing for well under a Benjamin. The hEX S delivers serious, no-nonsense networking power at a price that feels almost unfair. That said, this is not a router for beginners or anyone looking for plug-and-play simplicity. If the idea of a routing table makes you uncomfortable—or worse, confused—you should probably look elsewhere. RouterOS expects you to know what you’re doing and rewards you accordingly. If you’re already comfortable with OPNsense or pfSense, RouterOS feels very approachable—just a different flavor of the same game. The learning curve is real, but it’s nowhere near as brutal as some online commentary would have you believe. For a homelab, this router is an absolute must-have. You get the functionality of “big-boy” routers—VLANs, firewall rules, advanced routing, monitoring—at a fraction of the cost. In my case, a $75 hEX S completely outperformed and replaced a $1,000 mesh setup. No drama. No contest. If you want control, performance, and enterprise features without enterprise pricing, the MikroTik hEX S punches absurdly far above its weight. My only regret is not buying it sooner.

Good but took a bit of tweaking to get it working out of the box. Had to add a udp and tcp rule to get the DNS to work correctly. Also at one point was trying to reset the router and the button seemed to do nothing. For sure a device for advanced users or vive coders :)

hilariously powerful little guy
originally, i bought this to be a mikrotik test bed that i could use for messing around routeros and finding out. it works great for that, as it can do pretty much everything the big guys can do for like 1/3rd the price. currently i am using this in a camp trailer for internet access! a 12->52v boost converter allows it to be powered from the battery and send power to a mikrotik cap ax off port 5. the usb will happily take a cellular modem on an adapter and it hit the limit of usb 2.0 while downloading stuff. it's got enough oomph to run a basic firewall, capsman for the ap, a wireguard tunnel to my main router, grab time from gps (from the modem) and shove it locally over ntp (so bonus and silly) and all while being barely bigger than a raspberry pi. what! oh also there's an sfp port. i can run FIBRE OPTIC out of my camper with this LMAO. i have trouble thinking of a more comical situation this thing could be in. i will probably replace him with a rb5009 and return him to being my test bed, but for a fraction of the cost of a rb5009 he still works great as a test bed. absolutely goated little ROUTER. this ain't yo mama's 5-port babyman switch, he's the real deal.

Can never have enough of these
I can never have enough of these. Every time I buy one as a spare I end up putting it to work - so then I need another spare. And the cycle continues.

Absolutely no complaints.
Steep learning curve but works reliably once you understand where the developers hid everything. I used YouTube and ChatGpt to get up to speed and had everything setup in less than 20 minutes. Rock solid performance and I have no concerns that it will handle the assigned tasks without fail for many years. I'm a happy camper. Thanks!
