You do not have to use the straw. I just tip mine upside down and gulp.

The handle is solid. Water does not flow through the handle.

Q: Is there a trick to screwing the lid on?

With practice, you will find out the correct position to start to screw the lid so it ends up in the position you want it to be. Not difficult at all.
