Wow! I needed this book for 13 years, and I’m so blessed it found me. There a great gems of practical everyday tools in this book that are already helping me survive and thrive.

Learning, growing and moving forward
An amazing book and author. When I first researched Narcissistic Personality Disorder about 8 years ago, little data that could be found in a practical form for the common reader and the research articles were not easily accessible. Arabi brings to the table much experience and deals with the topic on many levels in easy-to-read essays collected together. She covers ever aspect of the topic from different perspectives. Not only have I learned a great deal but my understanding on how to deal with difficult people will be enhanced from reading this book. I have dealt with many family members who have NPD and this is the first author I have read that gives practical reasons on why me and my siblings did not develop the disorder but appear to have grown beyond it. Sadly, I have struggled through two marriages marred by NPD and found this book to be spot-on. My only caveat is not to throw the baby out with the bath water if you are of a Christian faith, especially from a traditional background. I greatly appreciate the information contained within the book and while I may not have agreed with many of the spiritual recommendations, it was easy to skip forward through those brief sections and find other books that dealt with that issue more definitively.

Abuse shaped the victim I was. I shape the survivor I am.
I have spent the last three years throwing myself into every kind of self help and development program I can to try and heal, but I found myself bumping up against an invisible wall I couldn't describe or understand. After starting therapy earlier this year I learned I had emotional trauma resulting from emotional abuse. From that I began my search anew and discovered this book. The emotional peace and freedom I have gained from this book have impacted me far more than anything else and I finally feel I have the understanding and language to describe what I have been going through. The author has the approach of a survivor, someone who intimately understands what I have been trying so hard to understand myself and could never describe to someone else. She speaks from the same emotional places of hurt and recovery I need, and I can almost feel her nodding her head along with my own wounds and comforting me. At the same time as she speaks subjectively, she includes the relevant research from therapists and specialists in the field, providing links and references to support everything she speaks about. Ultimately combining her approach-ability and comfort with hard facts. Ultimately this book helped guide me to where I can confidently say... "Abuse shaped the victim I was. I shape the survivor I am."

This book will change your life if you have been or are being abused by a Narcissist. Reading this book not only helps you understand the mind of a narcissist, but it empowers you to understand that IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT and YOU CAN OVERCOME the abuse. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Knowledge is power. Start with this book. Personally, I had so many "AH-HA" moments reading this book, but I had an epiphany while reading Chapter 4 "20 Diversion Tactics of a Narcissistic". Diversion #1, "he does that"; Diversion #2 "that too", Diversion #3 "wow, that too", Diversion #4 "woah, weird, that too".....on to 5, 6,7,8, 9, 10,11,12,13 ,14, 15, 16, 17,18,19, AND 20! YES...ALL. OF. THE. ABOVE.!! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. I highlighted the edges of that entire chapter and reference it often. Being in a narcissistic relationship of any kind, Spouse, ex, friend..Etc. is a never-ending cycle of abuse and you can't find the way out. But you can. Remember Sarah's final words in The Labyrinth "You have no power over me".

An excellent read, informative and eye opening
As someone who survived numerous online friendships with toxic narcs and bad friendships, I’d say a lot of this really put words to what I dealt with in perspective and helped me understand that it wasn’t normal. It helped me understand that I’ve been attracting them subconsciously and now I’m learning how to stop it from happening again. Thank you for a wonderful book, Miss/Mrs. Arabi.

Thank you for writing such a helpful, scientific and yet pragmatic book without drama or sensationalism. Calm, orderly and practical, it helps regain confidence and the ability to be yourself without fear of recrimination and in turn to let your abuser go and not come back.

Im a medical student, I read it a while a go and it really cool that has scientific evidence. It validates what you feel. Other books that I recommend if you happen to deal with a similar situation are The power of now by Eckhart Tolle and how to be a 3% man men by Coach corey. POWER helps validate what you feel understand what happen, helps you avoid the past mistakes and learn from there. Things do get better, I now how it feel to be down but trust me in some clock time you will looking back to this as one of the experience that most help you grow and learn. Things get better. The best is yet to come.

Ein detaillierter und einfühlsamer Ratgeber zu narzisstischem Missbrauch, der narzisstische Manipulationstechniken entlarvt und auch auf den Abbau emotionaler Barrieren (insb. in Form der Verortung der Schuld bei sich selbst) bei den Missbrauchsopfern hinwirkt. Für mich besonders wertvoll sind die Ausführungen der Autorin zu narzisstischem Missbrauch in der Familie und zu Isolation/Selbst-Isolation in Folge dieses Missbrauchs, da ich mich in diesen leider sehr stark wieder gefunden habe. Klare Kaufempfehlung meinerseits!

Shahida is probably the best author on this topic of narcissists. I had the misfortune to be with a covert narcissistic psychopath who made my life a nightmare of indescribable pain. Her books helped me to begin to understand what I was dealing with. If you only buy this book you’ll be in front.
