The Village of Eight Graves

The book came in excellent condition. This is my 3rd book of the series featuring Kasuke Kindaichi. Though he appears briefly, I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline.

I am a fan of Japanese mystery novels. This story was told in a very engaging way and grips you till the end. Though one can easily guess the murderer in this story, it was nonetheless a thrilling one time read.

If you liked Inugami clan from this writer, you would love this. Riveting from start to finish. Just go for it.

The story takes time to warms up, but the second half is fast. Not a typical detective story though. Quite readable.

Please keep translating these books. They are fantastic and I cannot believe it took all these years to have them in English finally. This one may be my favourite so far. Full of horror, thrilling discoveries and sympathetic as well as utterly scary characters. The world-building of Yokomizo feels like entering a painting and travelling in time. These books are incredibly immersive, the atmosphere of fear, dread, hatred bubbling under the surface sets stage for the explosive events in this book.

Das Buch wurde vor rund 50 Jahren geschrieben und spielt im Nachkriegsjapan. Durch die Mystik und den Aberglauben, der im Dorf der acht Gräber herrscht und der anderen Kultur und Zeit, wird eine ganz spezielle, unheilvolle Stimmung transportiert. Natürlich wirkt einiges etwas antiquiert, aber für mich haben diese alten japanischen Krimis einen ganz eigenen Charme. Die Geschichte wird von Tatsuya erzählt, weshalb der Detektiv Kosuke Kondaichi, der die Hauptfigur dieser Krimireihe ist, gar nicht so oft vorkommt. Er ermittelt dezent und unauffällig und ist eine sympathische Nebenfigur. Am Ende hat er dann aber seine klassische Zusammenkunft der Beteiligten, bei der er den Fall aufklärt. Die Handlung dieses Buches ist ziemlich ausgefallen und mystisch, aber interessant und spannend. Ich glaube, dass man diese Art Krimi entweder sehr mag oder zu antiquiert findet. Mir gefallen sie sehr gut und ich würde am liebsten alle aus dieser Reihe lesen, sofern sie denn in eine Sprache übersetzt werden, die ich beherrsche.
