My Favorite Form of Chlorella--Tablets are MUCH Easier to Take Than Powders
Chlorella is one of my favorite supplements and Now's tablets are a neat & clean way to take it. It's essential to find a form with "broken cell walls" to maximize your body's utilization of the chlorophyll these contain (chlorella is a form of algae). These are DRY tablets and are completely "mess-free." I take about 6 at a time, usually just once or twice a week. Most people will want to take a lower dose, daily. I find chlorella to be a potent energizer & I like the way it makes me feel. It naturally contains small amounts of iron and iodine and is an effective chelating agent (it will help remove heavy metals from your system). It's considered a "superfood" and is a great way for vegetarians to add a high quality protein source (research quantity though--Now's powdered version's a better option for this purpose). Start out taking just 2 tablets per dose until you learn how your body tolerates this; if you have a substantial load of heavy metals in your system, it may actually make you feel a little worse before you feel better. ALWAYS drink lots of water during the day while you take it--you need to help your body rid itself of the excess waste products this will remove from your system. Use caution if you're on any pharmaceutical medications, particularly if you use coumadin/warfarin or if you have impaired kidney or liver function. A little online research will pay huge dividends. Personally, chlorella seems to enhance my thyroid function; I have much more energy on the days I take this, and use it accordingly. It also seems to help reduce allergy symptoms for me. Now is one of the supplement brands I trust highly; their quality control seems to be outstanding and the prices are very reasonable for high quality supplements. Highly recommended! Have a question about Now's Chlorella? Leave a comment & I'll be happy to help you, if I can.

Can increase serotonin levels
I've used chlorella (either the 500mg or 1000mg per tablet) for several years inconsistently (i.e., usually for just a couple of days before abandoning them because I generally prefer capsules and dislike swallowing tablets). I'd never experienced any issues with chlorella before (which I always take with the same number of tablets of spirulina). A few months ago, I fractured a tooth with a mercury filling, but because it wasn't causing me pain, I ignored it. However, during those months, I experienced increasing fatigue and a slight imbalance in my gait, but I attributed those changes to the aging process. I also had new-onset eczema. Recently, the fractured tooth became infected, and I needed to have it extracted because of the pain it was causing. But, I was also at this time experiencing SEVERE fatigue, worsening imbalance when I walked and mild difficulty with long-term memory. So, I suspected I might have mercury poisoning from leakage of mercury from the tooth filling. A couple of days before my appointment with the dentist, I began taking chlorella 500mg, three tablets in the morning with breakfast and three tablets in the evening with dinner (along with spirulina, N-acetylcysteine and selenium), and I continued this for two days after my tooth extraction because I wanted to avoid further mercury toxicity from the extraction procedure. Soon after starting chlorella, I began having intermittent headaches. On the day of my dental appointment, I was surprised when my blood pressure reading was about 180/110. (I've previously always had perfect blood pressure.) Again, I thought the headaches and high blood pressure could be from mercury poisoning. After I stopped chlorella about two days after my tooth extraction, my blood pressure returned to about 135/80, and my headaches stopped. I've continued to take N-acetylcysteine (600mg twice a day) and selenium (200microcg twice a day) with the hope of binding any ingested mercury, and my fatigue and gait disturbance also have resolved. I was so impressed by these improvements that I decided to put my mother on chlorella/spirulina, NAC and selenium for heavy metal detox. (My mother is in her late eighties.) After about seven days of being on this combination, my mother began experiencing delirium and insomnia. She developed swelling in her hands. Her blood pressure also shot up to (180 - 210)/ (90 - 115). Giving 10mg of lisinopril failed to bring down her blood pressure. Because she had a stroke in the past, I didn't want to wait any longer, and I took her to the ER. On the way, I did an internet search and found that some brands of chlorella contain high amounts of iodine. Could this be thyrotoxicosis? In the ER, her thyoid function tests came back normal. A CT of the brain was negative for any acute findings. She was discharged from the ER without an explanation for the sudden rise in blood pressure and the delirium/disorientation. We were told to follow up with her primary care doctor to better manage the high blood pressure. On the day I had brought my mother to the ER, I had discontinued giving her chlorella and selenium. (Selenium can also raise blood pressure, but usually at a higher dosage than what I'd been giving her.) About 36 hours after her last dose of chlorella, she slept restfully for the first time in two days. Her delirium significantly lessened, and her blood pressure now measured about (155 - 180) / (80 - 95). I've only now learned that chlorella can boost serotonin levels. So, I suspect that my mother developed serotonin syndrome over the course of the seven days that I'd given her 6 tablets ( = 3000 mg) per day of chlorella. (Symptoms of serotonin excess can include any of the following: "agitation or restlessness, insomnia, confusion, rapid heart rate and high blood pressure, dilated pupils, loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles, muscle rigidity, heavy sweating, diarrhea, headache, shivering, goose bumps," edema (including pulmonary edema), atopic dematitis and, if severe: "high fever, tremor, seizures, irregular heartbeat, unconsciousness.") This can also explain why I developed high blood pressure and headaches when I took chlorella around the time of my tooth extraction. Perhaps these symptoms were not from mercury? I don't know for sure. Higher serotonin may be the reason why other users who've posted their experience with chlorella report elevated mood and a feeling of greater energy. (Maybe these beneficial effects are not entirely due to heavy metal detox.) But it could also explain why, in susceptible individulas, swelling, nausea/diarrhea or other adverse GI effects occur. It may be prudent, therefore, as other users have suggested, (1) to start with a low dose and gradually build up, (2) intersperse continuous use of chlorella with "drug holidays," (3) avoid taking other drugs (like SSRI's) and supplements that raise serotonin levels both peripherally and in the brain.

Good will buy again
I got a little sick when I first start taking this. But i spoke to my mom and she told me my body had to adjust to it and it did. Sometimes you get sick when you release toxins. But continued to take it for 2 weeks and felt amazing like it was something my body was missing. But your body does need a break from it it’s not a supplement you take all year round so I take it for 45 days and 45 days off. I do like the liquid ones better. I bought these pills for my friend and he enjoyed the pills better than the liquid so it just depends on what you like.

I feel some benefits after only one week
I realize it may take several weeks to feel the full benefits. I've had several negative and painful things going on with my digestive system for about 7 years now. A sensitive and highly acidic stomach that requires me to take a well known acid reflux medication once a day and sometimes can get to a point where that doesn't help too much. I had been drinking aloe juice and tried a few detox options in the past but all of them made me feel funny or only work temporarily. The option that made this condition livable was to take a bacteria supplement (the same in yogurt) the acid reflux pills and watch what I eat. I had to eliminate some of the food I love, mainly citrus or anything with too much acid or choose to pay the price. This still did not eliminate the problem it only curbed it enough to carry on a normal life instead of living in the restroom. One evening I was surfing the web and came across an article about chlorella and decided to give it a try. I started taking one pill after lunch on a weekend just to make sure if there were any "events", I would be at home. At first there was little bit of a weird feeling in my stomach but nothing I couldn't handle so I switched to taking it every night after dinner. After just three days I noticed bloating had decreased; pressure in my digestive system has been greatly reduced. After 5 days, my stomach feels like it has much less of the extra acid feeling I usually have and I could probably stop taking my acid reflux pills completely if I chose too. This is the first time in 7 years my stomach has felt normal and as a matter of fact, the last time I remember it feeling this good was when I was a kid. Now it's been about 7 days and i decided to start taking two a day, one with lunch and one with dinner. I should mention I still take the bacteria supplements, as well as a multivitamin and though sometimes it causes my stomach to gargle and sometimes I have to run to the bathroom, I feel much better. It seems to work and how else would it evacuate the toxins? I think this is the beginning of a good thing between me and this supplement. I do not recommend taking the recommended dosage to start unless you have an iron gut in which case you don't need these anyway. Start with one then slowly work your way up. If anything opposite happens in the future, I will add it to this review but so far, so good.

Best price you'll find
If you're looking at buying Chlorella you already did your research as to what it's supposed to do. The thing that many often miss out on however is the doseage that goes with the daily inclusion of it in your diet and of course, reliable purity. NOW does good work, at least so far as I've been able to uncover with way too many hours being a google detective, so their purity and quality is satisfactory for my needs. The dosage that this comes in is also spot on, 1k mg dosage 3x a day is considered the ideal, so in this case 1 pill 3x a day 30 minutes before meal time. That's relatively easy to do and remember as opposed to the smaller dosage size which, unless you have a issue with the size of the tablet, seems like added hassle. The 1k tablet is about the size of a ibuprofen tab and goes down pretty easily. The question then becomes is, does it work? Every person's body is their own chemical processing plant, but aside from the general weight of the research my own experience is that my Dr really likes my blood work. I'm overweight and have struggled against it my entire life, but my cholesterol, BP and other assorted numbers are at a level that my Dr is happy with and while my cholesterol was never high or even worrisome, since including a combination of Chlorella and Spirulina its' dropped 37 pts to be "surprisingly low".
