Intense bright beam
I've purchased several other headlamps and these Petzl units are by far the best. Don't waste your money on "Energizer", "Rayovac" or other cheapy brands - you will be disappointed and it is $20 wasted. These units cost what they do because they have a very bright beam that fills the areas in front of you, a superior lens, a comfortable headband, and easy-to-operate single control.I used this several times during a recent 5 day long black out, and it performed brilliantly. My friends and family were quite impressed with it's performance, and everyone was asking me what brand it was and where I got it. These units are also quite handy for working in dark areas where you need your hands free, and are extremely lightweight and well balanced. The lamp unit is quite compact and you almost forget you're wearing it.Petzl makes some fine products and I have a couple different models. I steer anyone that asks towards these headlamps, as they are well worth the additional cost.

Very nice lamp
I just picked this light up a few weeks ago for nighttime running. I also have a Petzl MYO RXP as well as various lower end headlamps from BD, Mammut, etc. This one is easily the best of the lot for running.Pros: 1. AAA batteries lead to a very light total weight. Compared to my MYO, I barely notice the Tikka 2.I find the MYO RXP AA battery pack to be heavy and prone to slippage on the back of my head. Adding a topstrap alleviates that somewhat, but it is still better suited to less jarring activity than running (It is excellent for XC skiing, for example).2. Unlike my cheaper lights, which only have white bulbs, the flashing red LED is very useful for times when I don't really need a light to see (e.g., running with streetlights), but really want oncoming traffic to see me. The cheaper lights are fine for basic camping or the odd hands-free task around the house, but I love the red LED option for running.3. CORE rechargeable option sounds great. (Note that I have not yet tried the CORE battery, so I can't comment on quality).Cons: Haven't found one yet.Obviously, I am not doing apples to apples comparisons with lamps of similar functionality and pricepoint (e.g., Black Diamond Storm or Princeton Tec Vizz), but that is just because I'd rather buy lights with different functionality at different prices than have a bunch of similar products with much finer differences. If anyone wants to send those other two lamps to me, I would be happy to review and compare them. :)

The white is really bright, the red not so much.
We just upgraded from the Petzl TacTikka headlamp. It had 4 LEDs and a red filter. The white and red light were much closer in brightness. It was good for when I went outside with the dog late at night and used the red filter so I could try to keep a little night vision. The red was bright enough that I could see the immediate area around the dog and I- good for finding his toy. If I needed the white light I could drop the filter and it wasn't totally shocking. With this new headlamp, it's much different. It's like the red would be good for reading a starchart (i.e. something right in front of you) after your eyes have adjusted to darkness. The white LED is VERY bright and good for looking for quite a distance. Switching from one to the other is jarring. I imagine that if that is what you are looking for then you'll be very happy. So, my issue isn't with the quality as much as it's with the operation of the headlamp.

Five Stars For Petzl Products
I use Petzl products professionally because they work well in their intended environment, and you can count on them no matter what. I've had an only Taktikka lamp for years, but the headband was getting a bit janky. The old lamp is rated for low lumen output and has a red shield to flip up when needed- important to me because I work backstage during shows and often need to see what I am doing without shining a hugely white light about the place.I wanted to step up to a brighter lamp, and would have bought one of Petzl's Pro-line headlamps but none of the three have a red beam option! What's up with that, Petzl? HMMM?Anyway, this lamp is rated at (I believe) 80-some odd lumens, but the red lamp aspect isn't much -if any- brighter than my old Taktikka. I've heard that the battery life isn't as good with the higher output which seems to make sense, but I don't use mine every day so I can live with that. The lamp itself works well with two levels of white-light brightness (plus flashing/strobe mode) and only one level of red light brightness (and also a red strobe mode) there's a flip up diffuser to switch from a a beam to spread the light when you don't need to see greater distances- but I haven't used this feature much so far. It's a little "fiddly" in that you have to press and hold the "on" button for a couple seconds to switch back and forth from red to white light- but this doesn't present any problems. It actually works well, and is easy to deploy. All in all Petzl ROCKS. I highly recommend them in general, and am personally well invested in Petzl gear.

A good versatile lamp
This is a handy light to have for projects around the house, recreation, etc. It lives up to the quality you'd expect from Petzl. It's very versatile with 2 power levels, a wide-angle deflector, and red mode. Oddly, despite being the "improved lumen" version, it's not quite as bright as I'd expect. But it does put out plenty of light to illuminate a project or late-night outdoor activity. It only has one button, and while simplicity is generally a good thing, it does make accessing the red mode more cumbersome than it need be. However that's probably more of a theoretical issue than a practical one.

Great piece of kit to have..
I bought this mainly to use camping and hiking at night where I wanted to have my hands free where with a torch you have to hold it with one hand. Have tested it reading in my room at night so far and I'm very impressed with the Tikka XP2, I looked into Petzl's other models and this suited my needs the best by far. The bright mode is 80 lumens, the half bright mode is 40 and can last for up to 190 hours of use which is amazing. It also has the red light function which can be used to preserve your night vision when walking at night. I sometimes do skywatches in the country and the red function is perfect for that, giving enough light to move about but not ruin your night vision. I think this is a great thing to own, even if only for powercut emergencies! Part of my reason for buying a Petzl is that they have a well proven track record and great reputation as a company in making these headlamps, so I know it's going to be a good design and quality, and I'm very happy with it and wish I'd got one years ago!
