Delightful for anchovy-lovers! A little goes a long way!
So yummy! I am purchasing again. Be advised, this product is only for people who LOVE anchovies and don’t mind intensely salty flavors. Also do be aware that this container is very small — can’t be more than 2 tablespoons of “relish” per container, but it’s meant to be used sparingly...you might only use 1/4 teaspoon or less on a slice of toast. The small quantity was a surprise but I’ve had it for over a month and still have some left, so a little goes a long way. Tip — make sure to not leave the container on it’s side in the fridge or the oil will leak out and dry out the relish. I reconstituted it with EVOO but better to avoid this accident.

Excellent, but a little goes a long way
Excellent flavor, but use it very sparingly or your toast/scotch woodcock will be overwhelmingly salty and fishy tasting. A little goes a long way, perfect for adding a touch of saltiness and savoriness to a dish.

Not For Me
the taste and smell of this product is awful. Perhaps if you like anchovy or any other strong fishy smell/flavor, this will be for you, but I threw it away after trying one small dab on the corner of a piece of toast.

Fantastic spread for toast or crackers
VERY POTENT. "Use sparingly" is what the package says, and it's good advice. You do not to use much at all. I enjoy anchovies, Worchestershire sauce, capers, et cetera, and I find this stuff delightful. Tons of flavor. Comes in a small plastic container which advises you to store it in the refrigerator once opened and to use it within four weeks of opening. A little goes a long way. Absolutely delicious for adult palates.

Have an adventure in food form
I got this because I'd only heard of Gentleman's Relish as a joke until I read a Corinna Chapman mystery where she enjoys it on bread. I'm weird for an American, I guess, and enjoy trying foods from around the world. Well, it came in much earlier than Amazon expected it to (yay!) So I tried it today. First, it says to only use a little bit and this is true. The flavor is explosive! I'm sure once I'm used to it I'll want more, but I only used the smallest amount (1/8 tsp maybe) and it was enough. It is salty, fishy, and spicy in a way I couldn't identify. The internet did not help - apparently only one person knows the recipe! I actually liked it better paired with a bit of butter on a baguette, but definitely trying it in different ways over the next few weeks. I'm especially curious how it is in scrambled eggs.

Ingredients
For those with food allergies, the ingredients on the label say salted anchovies (Fish), Butter (Dairy), Rusk (Wheat Flour), water and salt. The secret proprietary component are the spices which just appear as "Spices" on the label. The flavour is very intense and the product is highly concentrated. A little amount goes a long way. We thoroughly enjoyed this Patum Peperium Gentleman's Relish and it is exactly as I remembered. Ours arrived well packaged, fresh and quickly. We enjoy it on Scotch Woodcock savoury sandwiches.

Disappointing - Not like the original
I loved this stuff in my now-distant youth in England. It used to come in a heavy, white ceramic container. Part of the experience was opening the heavy jar with the old-fashioned writing on the paper label. It is now in a little plastic container with a plasticky label. Not quite the same vibe. But what was really disappointing was the texture and taste and the truly tiny amount contained. It tasted OK: salty as expected. (Hey, its anchovy paste). But as I remembered it there was more "depth" of flavor in the original stuff. Maybe the spice mix has changed. It was also a little looser and less grainy in texture. And, as noted, above there was a truly minuscule amount inside. Given all that, it would be better to just buy a tube of anchovy paste at maybe a quarter of the price (I just did so) or make your own anchovy butter. Just mash up few anchovy fillets with a drop of Worcestershire sauce, soft butter, nutmeg and black pepper. Better tasting - and much cheaper.

Authentic
It has flavors that Brits like uniquely. I’m from the U.S. but got hooked by an English friend. A little goes a long way and that first bite on toast is always a surprise. Strong flavors, salty, and tantalizing. Yum!

Good to finally find a new supply of Gentleman's Relish, albeit a smaller size and more expensive (I guess shrink-flation is a global thing!)

For lovers of anchovies and all things umami, this is a must! Great addition to lots of recipes to give oomph to the flavour, or simply spread sparingly on buttered toast. Not fishy so much as a really savoury flavour.

Utterly delicious! Spread sparingly on hot buttered wholemeal toast (preferably home-made), with a cup of tea. Your life will not be complete until you join the Patum Peperium club…..
