I consider myself an “expert” in the bag arena… The problem with bags these days is that there are so many options. From inexpensive to outrageous, new brands, boutique brands, designer brands etc., and it can be very hard to find the right one. Over the years I have been impressed or disappointed with ones in every category. Even if your best friend recommends a bag, it’s often tricky to know if it’s for you unless you can play around with it. Before you get not things like quality and durability, ask yourself what you want out of a bag and what you are using it for. Too many negative reviews of bags in general are from people who obviously expected a bag to read their mind before they bought it and were then disappointed that it “didn’t have an extra side pocket”… I have two jobs. I am a photographer who (finally) is just starting to travel again. My camera backpack is ergonomic, comfortable, and cleverly disguised to not look like a camera bag but more of a vintage military style backpack. It has specially designed adjustable compartments and pockets. It took a while to find. If I need to I can fit a change of clothes in there but that’s it. This is not that bag. I am also a recording engineer/producer, and I do move from studio to studio. I was looking for a bag that was rugged, but not as protective or as padded as a camera bag. I needed to fit two pairs of headphones in hard cases, some cables and accessories, possible change of clothes and snacks, and of course a laptop and/or iPad. I also needed it to double as a regular travel bag if needed, in a way my photo bag could not. More clothes, toiletries, small camera etc.. Waterproofing was actually more important than with the camera stuff, as not only is most of the photo gear already weather resistant, but you generally are out in the rain less… For general travel and recording, I am more often walking to get somewhere, on and off subways, and even a motorcycle. This bag fit my needs based on the description, photos and dimensions. Was I skeptical? Of course. Berliner Bags is fairly new (which is often a good thing, as new companies tend to think outside the box. Or bag…Yep,. I did that…), and the price was great. It honestly blew my mind. The leather is MUCH thicker than I would have imagined, and yet still soft, and getting softer over time. The lining is great. It is as rugged as a vintage military bag, but with luxury features. You can throw things in it that are a little more delicate without risk of scratching. And again, the leather is thick. I wanted zippers as opposed to flaps for this particular bag, and that is often where I get let down. A zipper can be the first thing to die on you after some abuse. The zippers are FAT! They are also stiff, which I like. It would be almost impossible for someone to try to steal something from the front of your bag while traveling without you knowing. If they could even get the zipper open in a stealthy way… One possible downside it that the bag looks REALLY cool, and that might make someone want to steal it…;) The straps are comfortable, and are definitely designed with the thickness and weight of the bag in mind. I can load it up and not be uncomfortable. The bag has been rained on multiple times with no issues. Don’t forget that this is leather, and if you are going to abuse it, you will have to look after it and condition it from time to time. It can last practically forever. Berliner Bags is actually based out of Berlin. This actually means something, because not only do Berliners walk around a lot in everyday life, and like most Europeans, travel a lot by train, but German engineering is notoriously good and well thought out. This bag has has obviously been “field” tested as it was being designed. Again, know what you want. Based on this experience, I imagine that all of their other bags are equally as good. They have many other designs and styles that will fit different needs, and this will definitely not be my only bag from them!!

Ich hatte den Rucksack relativ lange auf meiner Watchlist und habe dann zugeschlagen als es eine Aktion mit 20 Euro Abzug auf die XL Variante gab. Ich nutze den Rucksack nun seit knapp zwei Monaten und bin sehr zufrieden. Im ersten Moment nach dem Auspacken war ich tatsächlich sehr erschrocken von der Größe. Der Rucksack wirkt im zusammengedrückten Zustand sehr groß und vor allem breit. Sobald man den Rucksack jedoch befüllt ist er genau richtig. Auch im Vergleich mit anderen Rucksäcken finde ich ihn nicht aussergewöhnlich groß. Ich nutze ihn für die Uni und im Alltag auch mal zum Einkaufen. Die Größe hat sich bei mir absolut bewährt und kleiner möchte ich ihn auf keinen Fall haben. Den hier öfter als negativ bewerteten Geruch kann ich nicht bestätigen. Der Rucksack riecht einfach nach Leder und genau das wünsche ich mir wenn ich einen Echtlederrucksack kaufe. Da ist nichts künstliches oder unangenehmes dran für mein Empfinden. Die Optik gefällt mir sehr gut. Der Rucksack ist aus einem natürlichen Vintageleder (Ziege) und hat demnach einen sehr individuellen Look. Ich persönlich liebe das und finde es gut, wenn es mit der Zeit einen "used Look" bekommt. Die Aufteilung des Rucksacks ist super und besonders begeistert hat mich die hohe Qualität des Leders und auch der Innenverarbeitung. Man merkt hier, dass man ein qualitätiv hochwertiges Produkt hat und ich mache mir keine Gedanken, dass da in den nächsten Jahren irgendwas kaputt gehen könnte. Sehr gut finde ich auch das "Geheimfach" auf der Rückseite des Rucksacks. Dadurch sind Wertsachen definitiv vor Diebstahl geschützt. Obwohl ich bezweifle, dass es im vorderen Bereich möglich ist etwas geklaut zu bekommen ohne das zu merken. Ich persönlich mache den oberen Reißverschluss eigentlich nur zu, wenn ich den Rucksack beim Einkaufen bis oben hin vollstopfe. Im Alltag klappe ich ihn einfach um und verschließe den Metallverschluss. Nichtsdestotrotz sind alle Reißverschlüsse von hoher Wertigkeit und laufen einwandfrei. Auch das Tragegefühl finde ich sehr angenehm. Die Schulterriemen sind gepolstert und ich hatte noch nicht einmal das Gefühl, dass da irgendwas drückt oder zieht. Auch die Lochung zum Verstellen der Riemen ist bei mir exakt gleich. Ich bin sehr glücklich mit diesem schönen Rucksack und würde ihn in der Größe XL jederzeit wiederkaufen. Ich bin übrigens 1.83m groß und der Rucksack passt wunderbar auf meinen Rücken. Meine Freundin ist kleiner und auch bei ihr sieht er nicht überdimensioniert aus. Also lasst euch bezüglich der Größe nicht abschrecken von den Bewertungen.

Leather quality 👌🏼 Metal straps could be better. Beautifully made from inside. XL is huge size ! Worth the price. Leather straps finishing could have been better. Bought both the models XL size. But this one is prettier.

Not sure why Amazon lists this as "Berliner Bags Women's Utrecht Backpack" in search results, since it is equally suitable for men (and the actual description lists it as such). After almost two years' use this bag looks as good or even better than the day I purchased it. It is quite heavy so in some ways more suitable as a man's bag ... but thoroughly practical and a joy to own. One of the zip pullers came off. I contacted Berliner and they replaced it free of charge.
