Tool works better than specialized upholstery tools for upholstery spring clamps.
They work fine but the handles will touch each other when completely closed, I used them for upholstery spring clamps because the brand that specializes in upholstery tools are useless and has negative reviews, the more I use this tool, the more I like it, the only negative is the handles touch each other in the complete closed position, but it works better than the specialized upholstery tools for upholstery spring clamps.

ease worth the $
This tool made install the clips easy and could be done one handed. Also, less clips dropped. Glad I splurged on the tool and gave up on the pliers.

wide clip grip, slightly time consuming to load.
this tool works. To insert a j clip it must be opened completely and since it isn't spring loaded it requires both hands. the off set jaws are different but I think I will like that feature more as I use them. The J clips seem to have changed with a slight back bend that makes them straighter which might account for having to fully utilize two hands to load. So it is very time consuming when building large cages. tool quality good but it could have a spring to open jaws. the grips are good but didn't need to be so elaborate. It has the wide grip which is essential.

Well made. Right size. Here's how they work.
The tool is smaller than expected. That turned out to be a good thing as it is perfectly sized for the job, fits my large hand well enough and they are sturdily built with a good hinge joint like you'd find on Channelock tools of SnapOn. It took me about a minute to figure out how the clip goes in the tool. If you're right handed old the tool so the jaws point up and the opening pointing to the left and open the jaws fully. Insert the clip with the curved part down and the open side toward the open side of the jaws. Squeezing the pliers curls the clip into a perfect circle. Keep squeezing just a bit more after the circle is formed to overlap the joint slightly which keeps it secure. After inserting the uncurled clip into the pliers you can close the jaws a tiny bit to keep the clip from falling out while manipulating the clip around the wires.

Works well for upholstery —once you get the hang of it!
I used it to attach stay wire to springs on the bottom of a couch. Once I figured out that you just need to put the clip in and hold it in tightly, the j-clip stays in and you can hold it in one hand. It worked like a charm and seems verrry strong!

Tight. You have to pull to open them enough to get J clamp in.
These are robust enough and the rubber covered handles are comfortable. My issue is they are tight and you have to use two hands to open them all the way, they won't fall open like our old ones do (have since we purchased them) . So you wind up holding the J clamp on it and using yourself, or some surface, to close the pliers enough to secure the J clamp. No issues applying the clamps once in the plier.

Liked it so much I bought a second one
I volunteer at the Florida Wildlife Hospital. We were putting a wire floor into two cages for gopher tortoises. The standard set of pliers did not work very well. I bought the Ion and it worked perfectly. I liked it so much that I bought a second pair and donated them to the hospital.
