I was looking for a high quality wood chessboard and this board blew my expectations away! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the board encased in a high quality box and wrapped in foam to protect it during shipping. As soon as I opened the box I was blown away. The board is beautify, with vibrant contrasting colors, clean lines, and it's smooth to the touch. The board has a healthy weight to it. You can tell it's solid wood. I immediately pulled it out of the box to play a game. There was one small issue on the back where there appears to be a small imperfection in the wood. However, I don't expect this to be an issue. Anything else you see was probably from me playing before I took pictures. I would highly recommend this product.

Let me tell you—when you spend hours cutting out your own chess pieces (like my majestic, Venice-inspired set shown in the photo), you can’t just toss them onto any flimsy, travel-sized board and call it a day. No, no. They need a stage. A coliseum. A battlefield. Enter the AMEROUS 17-inch Wooden Chess Board—a board so solid and classy it practically bowed when I set my hand-carved bishop down. This thing is heavy enough to stop a charging squirrel, perfectly sized for standard and artisan pieces alike, and has the kind of elegant wood grain that whispers, “Yes, I belong in a study with leather-bound books and a globe that opens into a secret whiskey cabinet.” It looks great, feels great, and makes my handmade pieces look even more regal—like they’re about to discuss politics over espresso and invade a neighboring bookshelf. 5 stars. Would absolutely duel again.

I’m giving this 5 stars even though I had to return the first board due to craftsmanship issues. The black line surrounding the squares was unevenly joined, plus there were blotches of gloss finish on all four corners (from what I guess was another board resting on top of it in the warehouse). So be warned that the quality control on this board might not be consistent. That being said, the one I have NOW is perfect. It feels well-built and solid. The grains of walnut and maple wood are beautiful on the veneer. The board has 4 pads on bottom corners to prevent scratches or shifting during play. The squares are exactly 1 and 13/16 (1.8125) inches and they fit my large chessmen perfectly. I use German Knight Staunton Chessmen with 3.75” kings. Highly recommend this combination. It looks almost identical to the setup used by world championship tournaments. I also need to mention how this board comes very well-packed. The box is so protective that I will be saving it in the event I need to transport it during a move. It’s also attractive which makes it a great gift idea. I am OCD with things like this and literally spent hours researching boards and pieces. Believe me when I tell you this is the best one in the budget range and you’ll be happy. I bought this for my husband. He has his chest pieces on it and loves to look at it, but we haven’t really played chess yet. It’s a beautiful board very well-made.
