If you think you need something like this, this is the best possible one.
Exceptionally smooth and sensitive motion. Quality accessories with fine finish and smooth action. It is so smooth that you can interpolate to about .00025" with some confidence. For the beginners, this set is the first set you need, if you need an indicator set. It is the most versatile single indicator. It can true parts in a lathe chuck, true a milling vise, true the angle of a mill spindle to its table or to a part, or with other accessories, can be used to build and true spoked wheels. With an inspection mirror, it can be used to center a spindle on a fair variety of holes. .001" is good enough for anything a beginner might want to do, and good enough for most of what experts want to do. An advantage of that .001" resolution is the versatility that comes from a longer travel. This one has .2". Your .0001" indicators usually have about .03" of travel. (1/32") so whatever you are doing needs to be nearly right before you can even use them. How do you get them nearly right? With THIS one!

Professional tool professional cost
This s the most rugged and durable dial indicators on the market. My other ones had been bouncing around in a toolbox for 15 years still operational. I just needed a new set.

Replacement for broken dial indicator
The original dial indicator in my set stopped working and this is an ideti al replacement. First one lasted 40+ years so I am hoping this one is just as good.

AMERICAN PRECISION & WORKMANSHIP
Aside from the inherent design perfection of this back plunger style dial indicator with its accessories (the kit 196A5Z), the workmanship, fit and finish of this little indicator are flawless. Anyone who has fiddled with a cheap dial indicator's too tight bezel and jumpy tip or plunger knows how a simple indicating task can turn into a pesky, time consuming exercise in frustration. None of that here! Well worth the money. You can't go wrong with this Starrett.

Expensive but reliable until damaged.
The gold standard of dial indicators but I've seen a ton of these get damaged beyond use or repeatability in the field (power generation). Probably the most fragile Starrett offering. Treat it carefully.

Starrett is the only way to go.
Tech broke one of the two in my alignment kit. Quicker to get from Amazon than other sources. Oftentimes delivery time beats price.

This is a great indicator.
This indicator is extremely useful for general purposes in a machine shop such as, tramming milling machine heads, vises, centering parts on a four jaw chuck, centering tailstocks, and with appropriate accessory, it can locate holes and do other internal gauging. Although it is graduated in .001", you can be more accurate than that with the indicator, since most of the time you will be indicating so that the needle does not move at all, not just that it moves less than one graduation. If I had tried this indicator out before buying other kinds, I would probably have not bought as many indicators as I have, it fills a lot of roles, and covers a good deal of the indicating requirements in a machine shop. It's also extremely rugged, easy to use, and accurate.
