Lens Is New, Not Refurbished
First of all, I have to say that I am very satisfied with this lens. Prior to this purchase, I was using kit lenses with my D7500. Autofocus with D7500 always seemed slow and imprecise; sometimes it just didn't seem to work at all. With this lens, the autofocus works almost flawlessly. My earlier problem was cheap lenses, not the D7500. During a recent vacation, I took over 2000 photos and videos with this lens. They are generally good quality. However, I did get some vignetting when the lens was fully extended, and light was dim late on a cloud afternoon. Second, a still curious about the origin of the lens. It was definitely new; in fact, the first few times I extended it, it was still quite stiff, but loosened up immediately. The lens was absolutely clean and free of dust. I am certain that no one had used it before! So, why did this lens claim to be reconditioned? Theory 1: There is gold paint on raised lettering near the mount; on mine, the gold paint was uneven, thicker on the outer side and thinner on the in side. Maybe this was viewed by Nikon as a quality defect and the lens couldn't be sold as new. Theory 2: Nikon has of course discontinued the whole D series of cameras, and there is no longer a market for lenses in new cameras. Perhaps Nikon had overproduced these lenses, and realizing that they might never sell them, dumped them on the liquidator market. My lens arrived by itself in plain box (no printing), and there was absolutely no documentation with it. However, it did come with an aftermarket lens hood. This wasn't indicated on Amazon when I ordered, and I ordered a separate hood when I ordered this lens. So, now I can lose one! Shouldn't be hard to do, since I lose my glasses 8-10 times a day.

Factory refurbished & no regrets
I have 3 lenses for my D5100. 1 of which was the 18-55 kit lense. I was using the kit lense for the every day lense for those quick photo op moments where you need to have a lense on the camera around the house and other similar venues. I've taken some stunning photos with that particular lenses and it should not be counted as junk from the factory. However, the lenses auto focus just wasn't fast or hard a difficult time focusing; and as a result, plenty of missed, golden opportunities. Plus there were times in which I needed a little more further reach. I've done some homework and compared another Nikkor lense that fit the bill. The other was an 18-70 (I think) with equally good reviews. I chose the 18-140 based on 3 specifications namely the extra reach and the metal mounting plate. So I saved a bit more and waited patiently. Then theres a decent price gap between new and refurbished. At the time of my purchase there was a little more than a $100 difference. So I saved money there. One notable yet expected difference is in the weight. This lense is definitely heavier than the kit lense. It even feels like a better build (it should, it's a much better lens). However it's not something that you can won't grow into. You'll like it feel of it better than the kit. Well worth the extra time and effort. This lense is light years better than the 18-55 kit lense in every sense of the word. Again, I'm not spitting on the kit lense. Read reviews, do just a bit of research; Google "nikon 18-55 kit lense vs (whatever yer considering)". Don't just rely solely on people's reviews. But I whole heartedly recommend that you consider this lense to replace the kit lens. Nothing wrong with getting factory refurbished lenses either. But when it arrives it had better be in the white box with a new factory manual otherwise it ain't factory refurbished. If you get other than factory refurbished, just make arrangements with Amazon to return and replace. It's no problem to get what you expect from Amazon.

Awesome Lens
I wanted to upgrade from the Kit Lens and this was a great buy. Nikon built this thing like a tank. Nice and rigid construction with lots of options - Auto/Manual selection, Vibration control, metal collar. 18mm is nice and wide with good all around photos - no distortion that I ever notice on the edges, which some people have complained of with wider lenses. Zoomed out to 140mm still takes fabulous photos and I zoom out that length a fair amount of time. The only thing that might be viewed as a negative is the Auto Focus motor is slightly loud, but it doesn't bother me. Fast action on Auto with very, very good vibration control. I can use this lens with some longer exposures and not use a tripod, still getting pretty sharp photos. This Nikon lens is my "go to" and I rarely use any other lens. I purchased a refurb and have had no issues. Price is still pretty good. Definitely recommend this lens.

Great replacement for stock 18-55mm
Bought this to bring on a vacation where I knew I would be taking lots of pictures of the family and landscapes, and wanted a little more range than the 18-55 that came with the camera so that I wouldn't be swapping with the 55-200 as often. I also brought my 35mm prime that takes excellent photos. I ended up never swapping for either one the whole time, this took care of pretty much every situation. The 35mm is still better indoors without a flash, but this was good enough that it wasn't worth the bother. Picture quality is at least as good as the 18-55.. not sure I can tell a huge difference for the better, but it's certainly not worse - and has a far more useful range. I was a bit disappointed to see that it was made in China, but it feels very well made compared to the plastic-y feel of the stock lens. It is far bigger and heavier though, so if you put it on a small camera (like my d3100) it feels and looks a little akward, but not too bad. Definitely noticeably heavier when hanging from my neck. No issues with the fact that it was refurbished, looks brand new not a scratch on it. Was able to register it with Nikon.

Superzoom-super value
As a Nikon product owner, I am familiar with the high quality of their lenses and this one is no exception. I was not too concerned about buying this lens as a renewed item since I had purchased a renewed lens earlier and found it flawless. This lens came in a plain white box with front and rear lens caps. There was no lens hood supplied but that is ok since I have one from my 18 to 105 mm lens. The lens has a solid feel with no slippage. This lens is flawless with no scuff marks or scratches. The zoom range is astounding. As to warranty, I do not know if it is grey market but again I am not too concerned as Nikon products are legendary as to quality and do not expect to have the lens serviced soon,if ever. The cost savings is definitely worth these minor issues.
