It's probably about 3 1/4" x 3". You could definitely cut a sandwich to make it fit!

Am considering buying for my 4 year old's lunches. If I put yogurt or any type of sauce in the compartment, will it spill into the other sides?

It will spill into the other compartments. In my opinion the small 4 compartments is a better size for a 4 year old, my daughter love her 4 compartments container. But it is just for solids.
