What is the easiest way to remove the filter on a 2004 miata (nb) ls? wheel well? from the top? this fits a 1.6?

This fit my 1.6 NA fine. Didn't have any trouble removing it from the top, but it was just as easy from underneath. Not sure about the 2004 compatibility. Remember not to over tighten it, and apply a little oil to the seal before installing. Also make sure that the old seal from the previous filter isn't stuck to the block.

Does anybody know the diameter?

I use this item on my '91 Miata and son's '03 Protege5. Just measured the diameter on one in my used filter bin and it shows approximately 2 -3/4" (2.75") at the base and the cannister is slightly less at about 2.68 or about 68 mm.
