can you attach a string?

Yes you can. There is a small protrusion on the lid with a hole in it for a string.

Does it get foggy and hard to read?

No fogginess here either. We have had it for 4 years. It is still going strong.

Is it supposed to float sideway?? It floats sideways in to my traps.

I don't understand why yours is floating sideways. Maybe you just got a bad one. I've had mine for about a month and it is always vertical, or nearly so. It has gotten sucked into the skimmer box only once. John A.
