High-value knife and sheath for backwoods and camping. Made in Ukraine.
I'm pleased with this item, especially considering the price for the quality of the knife and sheath. The blade is very sharp and sturdy, full tang as well. The scandi grind makes it great for cutting and splitting wood for making fires and shelter. It should be good for camping, bushcraft and hunting, but not the best for food prep or fishing. The blade is carbon steel but needs care (and oil) for wet or damp environments. Do NOT store the knife in the leather sheath if you don't want rust. For storage, use included cardboard sheath protector and oil the knife with something non-toxic and tasteless, like mineral oil. Soften up the thick and stiff sheath with a light coat of neatsfoot oil. The dangler strap on the sheath will make it easier to move around (and sit) with the somewhat long 5-inch blade. The primary scandi bevel is about 11 degrees (22 inclusive), and I sharpened it at an 18 degree angle for a "micro-bevel" to make the edge stronger and more durable. The knife has a nice lanyard hole for attaching paracord to increase visibility and grip security. The walnut scales were slightly mis-aligned, but that was easily remedied by loosening the 2.5 mm hex bolts, aligning scales and re-tightening.

A few minutes of your time, and these become the perfect companion for the field!
Knife arrived pretty quickly, it came scary sharp, maybe the sharpest knife I've seen come from any factory in ages. Fit and finish? Not great, but not bad either. I took just a few minutes; I sanded the scales a little and re-oiled them, removed a small sharp spot near the lanyard hole on the tang and my new HK5 is now truly a happy knife. So as a first time buyer and life long knife lover, what do I think? I will be picking up more of these BPS knives, that is for sure and for certain. They might just be the best knife value going these days. Oh, do be careful when re-sheathing the knife, it is sharp enough and the sheath tight enough that one might damage the sheath if not putting the knife away carefully; I see this as a possible issue. The sheath is made very well, nicely sewn and fairly thick leather is used in its construction; another good value. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the spine of this knife. 90 degrees? You Betcha, most excellent! I have used it to remove bark and do other scrapings such as fat wood shavings and the material has just flown off so far. This thing is awesome really, and beyond awesome when one considers the price point. This BPS HK5 compares to knives costing many times as much, and comes through with shining colors.

Try it out for yourself
I saw many reviews on these knives, and I have a lot of experience with products like this, but I think those reviews ma have oversold the product. It's still five stars, between design and value for money, but I managed my expectations and thus was not disappointed. The initial sharpness is good, but not exceptional. Some reviewers scrape their arms and consider that shaving. Maybe my standards are too high, but I don't consider shaving sharpness a factory requirement. On top of that, the edge holding is good for the steel used. I did some light work removing twigs from larger branches that I cleared from my property, and I found the edge just barely sways from straight when viewed in a certain light. It is extremely mild malformation and the knife is still completely functional. I took it out another time, this time to split and chop a bit, and no further edge damage occurred. the handles, however, did shift very slightly. Once again, it's not to any meaningful extent, but you can now detect the roughness of the tang in spots on the handle where it barely protrudes from the scales. This is barely visible, but much more apparent by touch. The knife hits a great price point and I am not returning it, as I quite enjoy the design. The trend of sharpened pry bars is behind us but much strength is afforded by the broad flats of a scandi ground blade. The square spine, classic profile, and medium length give me the feeling that students of Dave Canterbury would love this product. All this and I haven't mentioned the sheath. This is the feature that no review has oversold. It's excellent, and worth the price on its own. I still give this knife, ignoring the great sheath, five stars for being built to a price point the right way. Back when the Mora Bushcraft black and Garberg were released, I was quite disappointed by their thicker stock and obtuse bevels, and I'm a huge Mora proponent (2000, ProS, an 510 being my favorites). This BPS is the bigger, badder, affordable scandi you want.

A MUST HAVE AT A GREAT DEAL
I have many knives of all price points and here’s my thoughts. I find this a very High quality knife, super nice leather sheath, nice wood handle scales. Fits nicely in hand, nice balance. Cuts and sharpens well. Being carbon steel, definitely keep it oiled up. This applies to any carbon steel from any maker. But you get a lot of craftsmanship and quality at a much lower price. I like fact it is made in Ukraine, where they know about pride in craftsmanship.I liked it so much, I have bought several other BPS knives in stainless (instead of carbon) since I’ve decided I want a bit less maintenance due to humidity in my part of the world.

Purchased not one but 2 of these knives and I'm completely blown away with craftsmanship and quality. Worth every penny! I chose to customize mine a little bit and I am even more impressed. These knives come with a Scandinavian grind, they are RAZOR SHARP AND STRENGTH BEYOND BELIEF. Will slice you to the bone in not careful. The sheath is made with the thickest HIGH QUALITY leather I have ever seen and both their knives and sheaths are FLAWLESS!! They are made of carbon steel so taking a few steps to keep them oiled will keep them looking like new and will last a lifetime. If, you're looking for a Bushcraft, Camping, Hunting, Fishing knife or even a great knife for home culinary, THIS IS IT. 100% Made in the Ukraine

Great weight and balance, came sharpened properly and it works well for bushcraft or whittling. I'll order more for the kids or as gifts for friends, and I love that it's made in Ukraine! The sheath is simple but excellent quality, and this thing is a great value for the price. Great usable blade that would work well for hunting or camping.
