Works like a charm
it figures... I was rebuilding a free desktop someone gave me, so my kids would stop fighting over ours. I needed a few bits and pieces- like the HDD. I ordered this one, then when it came in, realized the desktop used a SATA drive. So I put this one aside, thinking it'd make a great spare for the dekstop we had- I only paid $20 or so for it... when the SATA came in, it was a total brick. Got this one back out, and was able to replace one of two CD drives with this HDD and it works fine. To recap: great price, prompt shipping, it actually works.

Maxtor 80 GB Hard Drive
The Maxtor 80 GB drive may be small by today's standards, but reliable, hard working and a bit of a bargain if you are restoring or rebuilding older systems like I do.As I deal with a lot of older retired computers for the Computers For Kids project,I go through a lot of Hard Drives, upwards of 100 or more a month. So finding one of these jewels at a decent price, given the recent tripling of hard drive prices, was in a way a relief.Another low income child got their first computer thanks to these units.

Seems to be new, still in the wrapping
Needed to be initialized and formatted and was in the standard new hard drive packaging (Mylar I think? same as other hard drives I have gotten new). I selected the new option from goHardDrive and it came fast and is working great. I may stock up on more as the 25$ price for a new 80 gb IDE drive is amazing. This has no problems being recognized on XP and I would bet it would do fine on other OS's too.

Good hard drive
Its fast and reliable, that's good. Though if the BIOS freezes while trying to detect it, change the jumper pin to the cap limit and that fixes that problem. The jumper setting is between the power slot and the IDE cable slot. The map for the jumper pin is on the hard drive sticker on top, look for the cap limit and move the black piece according to the jumper pin map. I ordered this hard drive twice and all my computers had that problem. Other than that it is a great hard drive. Good buy.

Obviously not new
Although GoHardrive.com claims these are new hard drives, I've never opened a new drive with dust in the crevices on the bottom, or having sticky spots where a label used to be. But they still have some life in them.

Good Price but is it a refurb?
certainly can't beat the price, but there's nothing on the site indicating if these are new, used, or refurbs. Hoping for long-unsold "new" units that were being unloaded at a good price. Speedfan test indicated drive has no errors, but issued warning about excessive hours in use, so these must be used or refurb.

Perfect drive for anything
I received a bad drive at first, but the seller was quick to replace it free of charge. The second drive is still running as I type this, and has been running 24 hours a day 7 days a week except for my move. The first and original drive makes a nice, literal paper weight. Though being a paper weight isn't bad on my case, it makes for a pretty cool tech related thing. All in all I'm satisfied, the drive is oddly a little faster than other drives I have that are 7,200 RPM that are the same size and cache, despite being newer.

Used hard drive had bad sectors
I bought a used hard drive, while installing windows xp to this hard drive, it kept saying it was unable to copy files. Found out they gave me a hard drive that was recognizeable but had bad sectors. I had to partition the hard drive so that I could install on the part that wasn't corrupt. So basically I could install on the second half not the first half and it worked fine. I would have returned it but I'm too lazy.
