Cold Steel Nightfall Series Premium Fixed Blade Knife with Sheath, Magnum Tanto II

This is the first Cold Steel knife I've received, which was coated with axle-grease, as well as being virtually impossible to extract from its Security-Ex Sheath!!!. I read of a plethora of solutions (and returns) during my research about why extraction was so difficult. I began to systematically, very carefully examine the sheath and knife - and still, despite the strength of a strong man - couldn't extract this blade from its sheath. Then, I stumbled across the following, extremely easy and seemingly engineered into the combo - technique. My sheath has a thumb-rest in the front, middle, top of the sheath opening. It also has two small grooves. on both of what would be the outboard (right) side and inboard (left side) of the top edges of the sheath. If I, as a right-hander, index my right thumbnail in the farthest back, inboard (left side) groove while grasping the knife's handle, and I then apply actually very little downward pressure from my thumbnail onto the top of the sheath, into that groove (or easier yet - my thumb on top of the two inboard grooves) - while simultaneously using my thumb to leverage my hand and the knife grip together, upwards, away from the top of the sheath - the knife extracts amazingly easily.!!! Truly a well designed security feature on a very well designed high-security sheath!!!

This is an amazing knife! Made with premium American CPM 3-V powdered super steel, the CPM 3-V Magnum Tanto II features a highly wear-resistant DLC (diamond like coating) and is honed to a razor sharp edge. The looks are high quality and all business. The design is balanced, light, and comfortable for hammer, saber or reverse grip. Lay it on its side and it balances on its guard/hilt! The materials are world-class as CPM 3V is among the very best knife steels available for large blades in toughness and edge holding. The DLC coating is deep colored like gun bluing, even, and durable. At 7.5”, it measures just longer than a traditional USMC Ka Bar knife, but with a thicker 5mm blade. The sheath is decent, as some may prefer leather or ballistic nylon as opposed to the hard Secure-Ex sheath supplied. It was able to cut through newsprint and copier paper effortlessly. It is a natural design for piercing, snap cuts, and slicing. I love every aspect of this knife. Expertly made in Taiwan of U.S. Steel. Amazon prices are amazing as I got this for far less than suggested retail. Truly a world-class factory knife!

I’ve wanted a cold steel tanto for quite a while, but I was never fond of the plain steel versions. When they released the nightfall series in cpm-3v with DLC coating I had to have one. This is a very impressive knife and at one of the best prices anywhere around. I also have a similar model from KABAR, the cold steel design has it beat hands down. The knife came extremely sharp, evenly ground the entire length of the blade and is balanced well considering. Some complain about the sheath, I’ve had no problems with mine as far as removing and reinserting it so over all I’m completely satisfied with this purchase.

Have not used it yet but aesthetically it is pristine and perfect. Sharpness 9/10 out of the box. Only complaint is that the tanto blade on the nightfall magnum tanto, visibly, appears to be narrower than the Master tanto and the Recon tanto. Meaning, the width from the spine to the cutting edge is 2-3mm narrower on the Nightfall Magnum tanto.

This knife is no joke. If you are a knife lover then this is a must for your collection. If you have never owned a tanto style blade then, please get this knife. No other blade design penetrates or cuts like these do. I am an "American made" supporter but i can not deny that i wish this one had been made here. It would have done us proud. The steel in this blade has been referred to as America"s Supper Steel. It is the sought after steel for knives today. I was not asked to write this or compensated in any way. A bowie or kukri are more capable, especially the laredo bowie or natchez bowie by the same company. However, in my opinion they are too heavy and large to conceal consistently. The tanto is incredibly stiff due to the thick spine. It is therefore the best stabbing weapon. I think the tanto is probably overall the most durable and indestructible blade geometry due to the cross section and reinforced point. The tanto is a very effective and strong fighting knife.

they could really use a spot weld so the hilt doesnt loosen up and so that the handle doesnt fall off or let the blade loose creating a safety situation. I dont want a sharp blade falling into my foot or cutting into my leg because their production process couldnt use better glue or a spot weld to prevent the knife from falling apart within a week.

I’ll NEVER buy a knife from Amazon again. The box which the knife came in was very scuffed. As soon I opened it (consisting of a top outer and bottom inner piece that slide together) I immediately noticed damage to the inner bottom piece. Upon taking the knife out of the sheath, I was shocked to see the number of scratches and pin-like dings on the finger guard. They go right through the black coating. Someone has either tampered with it , or it has been brutally neglected by Amazon to have such damage. Either way, this is unacceptable on their end. Cold steel is an awesome company which has far better quality control than to send a knife out looking like this. I highly recommend, NOT from Amazon. Find a proper knife store, they will certainly care more about doing good business and not leaving you disrespected as a customer.
