There are better options on Amazon for this kind of thing.
I originally ordered one of these, along with a brick of 50 admittedly cheap lighters (super inexpensive), hoping it would work satisfactorily with them. Good news and bad news: The good news is that the refillable cartridge (which had the flint/steel removed) worked perfectly. Bad news is that it was very difficult to get it to work at all with the el-cheapo lighters I had bought with it. It may be possible to "shim" the generic lighter so as to make it more reliable, but that, and the child safety feature, make this a total pain. I also tried a 7-11 lighter, with the correct form factor, and that did not work well either. I actually pulled off the flint/steel wheel thinking that would make a difference but it did not. SO...... I found the SOTO Pocket Torch, which costs more, has no refillable insert, but doesn't have a child safety feature, and it works PERFECTLY with the cheap lighters, without any modification or special adjustment. I'll be giving them a review next! This one was a big disappointment. Get the SOTO instead.

A nifty tool
When I saw this tool and thought about ordering, several of my co-workers were also intrigued and so I purchased multiples. Everyone likes theirs and I like mine. So lets look at the product shall we? First: The disposable lighter Not just any style disposable lighter works. The Scripto or Toaki lighers work. My Bic didn't, in fact the SODMJ300 broke the gas release tab on my bic. The torch DOES come with a refillable cartridge shapes like a Scripto lighter with the flint and wheel removed, so you don't necessarily have to have a disposable lighter ready to use it. Second: While other reviews say that the torch requires two hands to work, I found that I could operate it quite well with just one hand and my hands are hardly large. I can just use my thumb to pull back and down on the tab on the back and it works! Third: Despite the name being "Solder-It" It does not solder very well, and at 2400°F it was expected not to work well. The solder flux the tool calls for does not flow well, and the high temperature tends to do more damage to the wiring harness than I want. This is NOT a soldering iron. I just tried it because it claimed it could be, but on nothing I expected to actually use. DONT TRY SOLDERING WITH IT. Finally: It is a butane torch. Thats what it is, don't expect anything else. It does one thing well, it puts out a hot torch flame like all torches. It just happens to use disposable lighters so that if you find yourself in a place where you can't use a refill cartridge, you can pop in a lighter (which you could find anywhere, even bumming one off a co-worker). We have been using ours for everything from heating shrink-wrap over cables to de-icing our car doors so we can open them this winter. We have even done some "emergency welding" (though it does a poor job at it) that held up to when we could get it properly repaired. One co-worker even lights his cigars with it! Thats why I gave it FOUR STARS. It only claims to be a butane torch that uses disposable lighters and thats exactly what it does. It doesn't work well enough to rate 5 stars, but this item has found its way into our travel-kit toolbox.

Turn a low quality lighter into a decent torch
What else can I say? Turn a low quality lighter into a decent torch. And it comes with a refillable lighter / fuel container. I ordered 50 cheap lighters here on amazon for $11 to pair with this.

Torch great! Lighter crap…
Been looking for these torches for a while. Bee using them for 15+ years and then they disappeared. Found them again! The quality of the torch is great! Unfortunately the the refillable lighters failed immediately, the valve where you refill the butane does not properly close and the butane leaks out. Very disappointing. Easy fix, just ordered up a package of refillable lighters from Amazon. Out of 4 lighters 2 of them failed in the same way… Geiss I have to play numbers game and order more lighters in the hopes that one of them will last. Unfortunate as it’s very wasteful and yay more plastic junk in the world… Recommend the torches but the lighter part is crap!!

This thing is great! It is always out ready for use
This is the second one I've had in many, many years. This thing is great! It is always out ready for use. The first one's refillable cartridge finally would not hold fluid. I found you can use the Tokai M13LCS or Scripto BM13L-50/Spectra flat sided disposable lighters as replacement cartridges. I don't know about the Tokai, but I got 100 Scripto Quantum from Amazon very cheap. The only slight modification needed to use the Quantum was to extend the plunger inside the torch head. The Quantum is a slightly shorter stroke than the original so the red thumb switch which actuates a metal plunger in the head does not push down far enough on the disposable black hold down that makes the gas flow. Carefully remove the tiny screw behind the Micro Jet peel off label on the left side (as you would hold it) and remove cover splitting the head in half. This will expose the round headed plunger w/spring. Carefully bend (use 2 needle nose pliers) the upper dog leg a little out and little down stretching the bend angles. Also correct the shaft (spring area) to be more or less straight again (this area is stiff). If reassembly does not fire and hold flame then follow procedure again to get a little more length on the plunger. The whole bending process only takes about 10-20 min. if you have the screwdriver (#0 tip) and pliers ready and if you have used these kind of tools more than a few times.
