K&N makes amazing filters. Don't let the "high-flow air" fool you, this will stop almost every particle from passing through it. Cotton attracts, pulls and collects dust and debris from the air very well. When K&N was a new company and started using cotton, they knew it did a great job at filteration yet didn't understand why. It is just as good, if not better than the paper filters, but it allows more air to pass through freely with less restriction and without compromising on the filtration of contaminates. In turn, you get about 2.5% to 3.5% more power from your engine. These are actual stats from tests done (YouTube). Considering the cost of ownership for those that want to keep their machines running for a long time, this will pay for itself over the long haul. You will need to purchase a cleaning kit for it (e.g. K&N 99-5000 Aerosol Recharger Filter Care Service Kit), but considering you only have to clean it once every 50,000 miles or 80,000 KM, this is a low-cost investment that you don't have to do very often.

Though listed for the Yamaha R3, this K&N works flawlessly on my Suzuki GSX-R 150 (not sold in the US), a little superbike that's insanely fun and optimized purely for competition. The bike's performance is noticeably better—snappier throttle response and more power. It fits perfectly, does exactly what it promises, and it's 100% genuine. Best part: you recover the investment short-term since no more buying disposable filters every oil change. You help the planet and your wallet. If it works this well on my Suzuki, it'll be perfect on a Yamaha too. K&N is world-class. Highly recommend!
